Doha round of trade talks suspended after negotiations fail

Tuesday, July 25, 2006

The director-general of the World Trade Organisation (WTO), Pascal Lamy, suspended negotiations in the Doha round of trade talks on Monday, after a meeting of six “core” negotiators India, Brazil, the United States, European Union, Japan, and Australia in Geneva failed to make any headway in reconciling differences over agricultural trade liberalisation. The US wanted cuts in import tariffs for farm products, which were rejected by EU, Japan and India, who asked for cuts in agricultural subsidies.

Peter Mandelson, the EU trade commissioner, told the Financial Times: “If the US continues to demand dollar-for-dollar compensation in market access [cutting tariffs] for reducing domestic support, no one in the developing world will ever buy that and the EU will not either.” Brazil also identified the US stand on subsidies as the reason the talks failed.

Susan Schwab, the US trade representative, said that the other countries sought exemptions from tariff cuts for a wide range of goods and that such exemptions would defeat the object of the talks – to expand trade. “As we went through the layers of loopholes . . . we discovered that a couple of our trading partners were more interested in loopholes than market access,” she said.

The Indian Commerce and Industries Minister, Kamal Nath said that developing countries could not allow their subsistence farmers to lose their livelihood and food security to provide market access to agricultural products from developed countries.

Whenever walking at your place of employment always carry a clipboard and walk fast. This will make you look extremely busy and your boss will not give you further tasks!

If you are going to the loo and like to read a newspaper whilst well you know what carry it in a folder marked “Urgent” and again walk briskly.

Have huge piles of documents on your desk and whenever the boss walks past wipe your brow and mutter under your breath as you rummage through the paperwork trying to find that important piece of work.

If somebody leaves a voicemail for you and it sounds urgent make sure you call them back when you know that they are at lunch and leave a voicemail in return. This means that you have fulfilled your duty in returning their call and the ball is back in their court.

Make sure your computer screen is facing away from everybody else’s this will give you plenty of time to catch up on your personal email, make arrangements for the weekend and still look busy

Always have the latest and most complicated piece of business software open and minimised so that if your boss happens to walk over to your desk you can maximise it and ask for help! The boss usually doesn’t have a clue and will quickly scurry away leaving you plenty of time to sort your next holiday.

Do you want a promotion? Find out what time the boss arrives for work. Make sure you beat him to it by a few minutes every day and leave a couple of minutes after him. Always look busy when he arrives and as he is leaving.

Find out what his hobbies are, his birthday and his favourite treats. By making him feel special you are more likely to be in his mind when he is handing out wage rises.

If you work for a large company make sure you take your holidays at the same time as your boss. This is also the right time to extend your weekends by calling in sick on either Friday or Monday!

The above applies just as well if your boss is female. Can you suggest any other business dos and don’ts?

Late-night vote sets Obamacare up for filibuster-free repeal

Saturday, January 14, 2017

At 1:30 a.m. on Thursday morning the United States Senate voted to include the repeal of the Affordable Care Act, better known as Obamacare, as part of a budget blueprint. This procedural measure allows most of Obamacare to be repealed by a simple majority rather than the usual requirement of 60 out of the senate’s 100 votes and effectively prevents the use of filibuster.

“We’re working with legislative leaders at this very moment to begin to craft legislation that will repeal the most corrosive elements of Obamacare — the individual mandate, the taxes, the penalties — but at the same time, moving separate legislation that will allow us to introduce the kind of reforms in American health care that’ll lower the cost of health insurance without growing the size of government,” said Vice President-elect Mike Pence.

Democratic Senator Maria Cantwell of Washington had a different view, going so far as to call this “stealing health care from Americans.”

The filibuster is a last-ditch tactic in which parties opposed to a certain motion refuse to relinquish the floor until their opponents give in or compromise.

Although the 51-48 vote was mostly along party lines, some Republicans have expressed uncertainty about repealing Obamacare before a replacement system is worked out. Although president-elect Donald Trump has called for a “repeal and replace” plan, saying that a new health care system would be enacted “almost simultaneously,” many in government and the press have expressed doubts about whether this would actually happen.

Senator Susan Collins of Maine said she would like to at least see a well-constructed plan before voting and Senator Johnny Isakson of Georgia said repealing Obamacare without replacing it was “unacceptable.” These concerns were shared by members of the House of Representatives. “We need to be voting for a replacement plan at the same time that we vote for repeal,” added Representative Mark Meadows of North Carolina. Representative Tom MacArthur of New Jersey agreed, saying, “We’re loading a gun here. I want to know where it’s pointed before we start the process.”

Anna Merlan of Jezebel and Anthony Taylor of the Associated Press dismiss Trump’s timeline as “impossible” given the complicated nature of U.S. congressional workings. Senator Collins agreed, saying “I don’t see any possibility of our being able to come up with a comprehensive reform bill that would replace Obamacare by the end of this month. I just don’t see that as being feasible.”

The Affordable Care Act, which is often cited as a key accomplishment of the Obama administration, has had a mixed reputation, and many conservatives believe a market-based health care system would be more flexible and efficient and less costly, and many believe that the Affordable Care Act only passed because of Obama’s later discredited pledge that no one who liked their current health plan would have to switch. Matt O’Brien of The Washington Post claims a large tax cut that would result for the wealthiest 1% of citizens if Obamacare funds were not converted to other purposes, estimated at about $32,820 annually per person by the Tax Policy Center, is also a significant motive.

Republican Senators set a date of January 27 to repeal Obamacare, according to NBC News. House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy of California says legislation repealing Obamacare and replacing it could ready by late February. According to Democratic Senator Bernie Sanders, as many as 30 million people could lose their health insurance if the ACA is repealed.

bookmark_borderProperty Investments For Anyone Building Wealth}

Submitted by: Peter Kenny

One of the most troublesome concerns for those considering property investments is having the necessary knowledge to make quality decisions regarding a topic they may not know a lot about. Instead of shying away from property investment methods, though, those looking to build wealth should focus on this area. The underline fact is that anyone that has a basic knowledge of investment and the willingness to learn can take full advantage of the many real estate investments available today.

What You Do Not Need To Do

Today, there are plenty of investment methods available to you in terms of real estate investing. You do not have to purchase a piece of land and either sit on it to see a rise in its value nor do you have to work on building and developing that property to see a profit. These things do take time, money and larger risk than is necessary. When you invest in property through property options, for example, you minimize your risk substantially. There are also things you do not have to do.

1. You do not have to manage the overall business of running the property.

2. You do not have to handle the costly repairs to the property to see a profit.

3. You do not have to invest a lot of your money into the real estate in the hopes of seeing a profit.

4. You do not have to invest a lot of time in your property in the hopes that the value will rise in the long term.

5. You do not have to invest your time in learning the business of running rental property, or real estate in general.

When you consider property options, you have plenty of opportunity without a lot of investment at all.

Getting Started In Investments

Anyone considering building wealth needs to take into consideration the many benefits that can and do come to those that invest in real estate. They need to realize the true benefits of security and value that come from property investing over other types of investing. Getting started does not have to be difficult. Most importantly, getting started in the business of real estate does not have to be costly. You do not need a large amount of money to get started and that means that anyone can find themselves in the position to build wealth securely through real estate without risking a lot at all.

For those considering wealth building through property investing, it pays to take the time to gather facts and information. It is also helpful to understand the overall process of property investing. If you do decide to go through property options as your method of investing, take the time to learn the business of doing so. You will find that in terms of securities, stocks and other types of investments, that property options can really help you to make it without causing you to break the bank in the process.

Realize too that plenty of people that have a huge stake in property investing right now, including big name celebrity investors have used property options as the way in and the way up the ladder. Nothing is too complex, but everything is a potential or a gold mine.

Real estate investing should be something you consider, from day one of investing.

Colleges offering admission to displaced New Orleans students/AL-KY

See the discussion page for instructions on adding schools to this list and for an alphabetically arranged listing of schools.

Due to the damage by Hurricane Katrina and subsequent flooding, a number of colleges and universities in the New Orleans metropolitan area will not be able to hold classes for the fall 2005 semester. It is estimated that 75,000 to 100,000 students have been displaced. [1]. In response, institutions across the United States and Canada are offering late registration for displaced students so that their academic progress is not unduly delayed. Some are offering free or reduced admission to displaced students. At some universities, especially state universities, this offer is limited to residents of the area.
