Scotland denies bail to terminally ill man convicted of Lockerbie bombing

Saturday, November 15, 2008

Scotland has refused bail to the Libyan man convicted of the bombing of Pan Am Flight 103 despite his terminal cancer, as he can receive treatment in prison. Abdelbaset Ali Mohmed Al-Megrahi was jailed in 2001 for the 1988 bombing of the transatlantic airliner, killing 270 people, but is seeking to have his conviction overturned.

Minutes after Edinburgh’s Appeals Court rejected bail on compassionate grounds Jim Swire, spokesman for the victim’s families who lost his daughter in the disaster, complained about the ruling. “It has never been a goal of our group to seek revenge,” said a lawyer outside the court reading from his statement. “The refusal of a return to his family for a dying man whose verdict is not even yet secure looks uncomfortably like either an aspect of revenge — or perhaps timidity.”

Al-Megrahi, a former intelligence officer, is 54 and serving a minimum of 27 years for the bombing. He has advanced prostate cancer which is spreading through his body. His request for bail was rejected by Lord Hamilton, Scotland’s head judge, who said that as doctors say he could live a few more years he should not be released unless and until after his appeal succeeds or his condition worsens.

Some other doctors give his time as just months, as the cancer has reached his bones. Hamilton however said that palliative hormone treatment could prolong his life. Hamilton also said Al-Megrahi was not suffering “material pain or disability”.

The Scottish Criminal Cases Review Commission ruled last year that the conviction may be a miscarriage of justice. It said there was significant doubts to be raised over several key pieces of evidence in the original trial.

Wedding bands form an essential part of any wedding service and finding affordable wedding rings requires a lot of time and effort. If getting married qualifies as one of the major events in your life, then finding and buying the engagement rings will also be of vital importance. Besides the wedding gown, the wedding ring is probably the item which has the most amount of time spent to find the perfect one to symbolize a couple’s love and unity. The truth is this can be one of the most stressful and befuddling experiences you will ever undergo, especially if you don’t know what makes up a good diamond and ring design and how it all affects the price you will pay. Most people need to work around a budget when planning a wedding so finding the lowest price wedding ring sets for the best quality that won’t break your bank is a top priority.

Fitting Wedding Rings Into A Budget

Couple are most likely to spend more on their engagement rings and will usually spend less on the wedding band. If you are not quite sure how to allocate to each of these, some wedding organisers advise to use about 3 percent of their wedding budget (wedding gown, venue, catering, wedding reception program, etc.) on the rings. So, if you are having a $10,000 wedding, then approximately $300 should be put aside as payment for both rings, and a $20,000 wedding would allow you to spend $600 on the wedding rings. You both will need to figure out how this money is to be split between the two of you. The price will depend on the thickness of the rings as well as the incorporation of any diamonds or special gems and stones.

“Woofstock” dog festival in Toronto, Ontario, Canada

Tuesday, June 12, 2007

North America’s largest outdoor dog festival came back to Toronto last weekend for its fifth year. It ran from the 9th of June to the 10th of June at Toronto’s historical St. Lawrence Market. A Wikinews reporter was there on Sunday to report on some of the events that happened on the last day.

The “Woofstock” dog festival attracted as many as 140,000 people with their dogs. The festival had tons of accessories, sold under tents, to buy for dogs; food, toys, designer clothes, and more. About 400 vendors and exhibitors were there to promote their products, which also gave private dog companies or groups a chance to show their new products. The local SPCA and some animal rescues were under tents answering questions from visitors. While walking, all visitors could see the CN Tower and other very tall buildings.

One of the local TV stations, Citytv, was there. They hosted a live event at the show which was broadcast on TV. People came up on the stage and asked questions regarding their dogs and the host and co-host answered them.

A man, who called himself the “Chalk Master”, drew two pictures on pavement with chalk. He did it for free but donations were welcome. One was a picture of a girl’s head beside a dog’s head, and another with a wolf.

“Hello Humans. I’ve been invited here to provide your eyeball(s), with some pretty colours. I don’t get paid as I work this weekend strictly for tips… so, if you like what you see please make a DONATION. If you don’t like it simply reach into the pocket of the person next to you and give me their money. CHALK MASTER.”

A contest called “Canada’s top dog” had its own tent with a professional photographer taking pictures of dogs behind a white screen; the winning photo is to be published on the cover of “Puppy and dog basics” magazine.

Large “Gourmet” dog bones were also served from a cart and table.

Next year’s festival is expected to be bigger and better with even more attractions.

A leak at the Sellafield nuclear reprocessing facility on Cumbrian coast, England

Monday, May 9, 2005

At the Sellafield reprocessing plant, a leak in the process was spotted on April 19. The leak did not cause danger to people or the environment but it disturbed the normal operation of the plant.

Workers at the plant noticed a discrepancy in the amount of material being reprocessed that enters pipes that lead to a set of centrifuges and the amount of material actually arriving at the centrifuges. They used remote cameras to find the crack where the material was escaping; over twenty tonnes have leaked into a steel lined chamber.

The material, consisting of mostly uranium and some plutonium dissolved in nitric acid, would have been reprocessed in the centrifuges. The large stainless steel chamber that now contains the spilled material is too dangerous to enter due to radioactivity, though it poses no danger to those inside or outside the plant.

The plant has been shut down pending repairs.

Responsibilities of L6S Belt Certification Test Holders

Those who are aware of the six sigma projects would be aware that the abbreviation L6S is just an acronym for Lean 6 Sigma course, a variation of the original six sigma methodology. Practitioners of this course are also mandatorily required the begin at L6 sigma green belts levels like their counterparts who might have enrolled for the normal version and must appear for L6S belt certification test in order to be labeled as being qualified.

There are times when companies or individuals do not have time to undertake the entire six sigma course owing to lack of time or other commitments. In such a situation courses offering L6 sigma green belts emerge as viable alternatives that do not stretch for a long duration and yet offer the same level of training. This explains the addition to the term lean the course is basically a slimmed down version of the six sigma, although just as effective. However, because much of the course syllabus is same, knowledge of six sigma is a must for undergoing the L6S belt certification test and scoring high marks.

Like the six sigma, the L6 sigma green belts also emphasize on the fact that practitioners should identify and pinpoint defects in the production cycle and fix them with solutions which are effective as also long-lasting. Redesigning of the entire infrastructure of the organization as per the DMADV principles is what forms the objective and this ensures that the improvised design of the product is always as per the customers requirements.

South Korean president expresses willingness to supply COVID-19 vaccines to North Korea

Thursday, June 17, 2021

On Monday, during a state visit by the South Korean president to Austria, president Moon Jae-in said in a joint press conference with Austrian president Alexander Van der Bellen, “If North Korea agrees, [we] will push proactively for cooperation on [COVID-19] vaccine supplies for it”.

Austrian President Van der Bellen agreed with Moon, speaking about united efforts of all countries to end the pandemic. He further said, “In case of any signal from North Korea [for requesting help], we will of course help.”

The status of COVID-19 in North Korea is unknown, as the regime still claims to have no case of the virus, a claim many foreign observers qualify as untrue. In an article by Daily NK, North Korean military authorities are reportedly “scrambling” to secure any doses of any vaccine to inoculate their military in a “military-first” effort, with multiple sources claiming up to 25% of the military has been placed in quarantine.

In the same article, Chinese medical supplies have reportedly been banned from use in Pyongyang hospitals after the death of an official who had received an injection of Chinese-made medicine. The exclusion of Chinese medicine may have also been applied to Chinese-made vaccines, such as the ones made by Sinovac and Sinopharm, furthered the article.

The visit was the first of its kind, as president Moon is the first South Korean president to make a state visit to Austria since the countries first opened diplomatic relations in 1892. Relations between the two countries will mark their 130th anniversary next year.

NASA launches satellites to study northern lights

Saturday, February 17, 2007

A Delta II rocket blasted off from NASA’s Cape Canaveral launch pad today, carrying five satellites designed to investigate the northern lights and the electromagnetic storms that cause them. The launch had been twice delayed due to bad weather, but was eventually performed at 23:00 UTC.

NASA and the Canadian Space Agency have collectively invested $200 million in the mission, known as the THEMIS Project. Through this mission, they hope to develop better techniques to forecast electromagnetic storms, in order to protect communication satellites, power grids, and spacewalking astronauts. Scientists from the University of Alberta and the University of Calgary also helped with the project.

The Sun continuously sends a stream of charged particles, called the solar wind, at the Earth. We are generally protected from the solar wind by the Earth’s magnetosphere. During substorms, however, the magnetosphere gets overloaded by the solar wind and the magnetic field lines stretch until they eventually snap back, energizing and flinging electrically charged particles towards Earth.

Scientists want to find out what snaps in the overloaded magnetosphere to trigger a substorm.

Want a better Publicity? Pick the Low Hanging Fruit

by

Lisa harris

Sounds simple enough, right? But what does it mean? When I retired from TV news last summer to start a company as a Dallas public relations consultant, I promised myself to always grab the easy stuff for my clients first—in other words, the stuff the media is already giving you.

Feeding Frenzies

When reporters are going crazy about one topic, you can\’t beat \’em…so you might as well join them. For instance, this is the anniversary week of the government\’s raid on the polygamist sect in West Texas. Oprah got an exclusive behind-the-scenes tour and is dedicating a whole hour to the topic on Monday. It begins a week of anniversary pieces that you\’ll see on the news.

Our Dallas public relations agency represents a couple of attorneys who dropped what they were doing one year ago and headed to San Angelo to represent children they didn\’t know—and they didn\’t make a dime. They were among 400 attorneys who did the same. It may be the largest pro bono effort in history. We\’re getting our clients out in front of the media this week to reflect on the lessons learned.

Problems that Need Solving

When a reporter does a story about a problem that needs fixing, an experienced Dallas public relations agency will be the solution.

Right now there are lots of news stories about the flooding in the Upper Midwest…but as a public relations expert, I\’m also starting to see local stories of volunteer groups packing up and headed to help. When the media points out a problem, it\’s almost obligated to cover the story when you call up and announce that you\’re coming to the rescue.

Holiday Stories

Tying into a holiday is easy. Yesterday the Dallas Junior Chamber of Commerce held an Easter egg hunt for visually impaired children and received widespread coverage.

The images of children searching for eggs that make a \”beeping\” noise was too irresistible for the media to pass up. The DJCC\’s story on Saturday is just the first of a wave of Easter stories that you\’ll see over the next couple of weeks– a clever Dallas public relations agency will also capitalize on the holiday feeding frenzy.

Expert Advice

The next time you find yourself talking back to the TV set when the news is discussing something that you have expertise in, reach out to the media and suggest a follow-up.

As a Dallas public relations consultant, I am a PR expert. What makes you an expert? If you do it for a living, you\’re an expert. If you\’re a Realtor, you\’re a real estate expert. If you\’re a lawyer, you\’re a legal expert.

Trust me, this low hanging fruit is all around you. The next time you find a story that\’s ripe, have the courage to call a journalist and harvest some free publicity.
