Face Lift – Good or Bad?

by

John PawlettIf you are considering getting a lift for yourself, there are a few basic elements about a face lift that you should learn, know, and understand before undergoing this major procedure.

First of all, learn all you can about what a lift is and about the actual face lift procedure. A lift is a type of complicated cosmetic facial surgery that involves lifting the face by treating wrinkles and severely sagging skin to achieve a younger, healthier appearance in the face. A lift can tighten up your skin, repair creases and wrinkles around your eyes, nose, and mouth, and remove excess fat from your neck.

But, what specifically is involved in this type of cosmetic surgery? If you are considering a lift, its essential for you to first learn all the facts and everything you can about lifts from books, brochures, and online resources to lift surgery patients, your doctor, and a cosmetic surgeon.

Furthermore, not everyone is a good candidate for lift surgery. Typically, good candidates are in their 40s, 50s and 60s, with wrinkles and noticeably sagging skin in and around the face. In addition, not all lifts are the same. There are many different types of lifts including chin surgery, eyelid surgery, neck lifts, throat lifts, and other lift variations. Its important to understand the different types so you can determine which lift surgery may be right for you.

Finally, consider the cost. lift costs vary considerably from country to country, city to city, surgeon to surgeon, and depend on the type and extent of surgery needed. Find out how much it will cost and decide if it will be worth it to have the kind of lift you think you need.

I have no trouble in attesting to the fact that a lift has given me a new life! While at first I was concerned about the possible repercussions of getting a face lift, I can honestly look back on having a face lift done as one of the best decisions I ever made. After getting a face lift and seeing the final results, I am extremely happy with my new appearance.

Before I got a face lift I was dissatisfied with my appearance; unfortunately, with age, I had developed crows feet around my eyes, unwanted frown lines, and my forehead started to develop deep furrows. In truth, it doesnt sound all that bad, but the slow facial changes I was undergoing were really having a bad effect on my self-esteem. Even worse, as my level of self-esteem was affected, so was my overall confidence I started feeling self-conscious about my appearance. Thats when I decided to make some changes and I am so glad I did.

After the face lift, I felt like I had a new lease on life. The face lift minimized the natural changes I had undergone and I still feel years younger. I approach everything I do with a new level of confidence and self-esteem. Whats more, my improved self-esteem has given me a new vigor; I dont get depressed about my appearance and I have more enthusiasm for life than ever before! Clearly, having a face lift has given me a new life!

Ricky Hatton regains IBF light welterweight title

Sunday, January 21, 2007

Ricky “The Hitman” Hatton regained the IBF light welterweight title belt he relinquished less than 12 months ago when he defeated Juan Urango in Las Vegas, Nevada tonight.

“The Hitman” won by unanimous decision, as the fight went to 12 rounds. Despite early match odds suggesting Hatton would dominate the fight, this was not the case. Each round was close, but most pundits and judges alike agreed that Urango only won 1 of the 12 rounds, with Hatton taking the other 11.

Despite the unfamiliar confines of Las Vegas, Hatton looked touched by the ringing of football fan-like chants, familiar in British boxing, that rang around the arena, as more than half of it was filled by traveling support from across the atlantic.

Many in the UK will hope Hatton has ended the “curse” that has seen names such as Frank Bruno, Naseem Hamed, Barry McGuigan and others fall short while headlining fights on “The Strip”.

From here, it is widely believed “The Hitman” will move on to fight Jose Luis Castillo in June, again likely in Vegas.

Chad releases seven Europeans held in alleged kidnap plan

Sunday, November 4, 2007

Earlier today, the government of Chad set free three French journalists and four Spanish flight attendants, who had been held since October 25. Chadian authorities had been investigating the role of the seven and 14 other suspects with regard to an attempt to fly 103 African children to Europe for placement with host families.

The release of the seven came as French President Nicolas Sarkozy arrived in Chad to hold talks on the case with Chadian officials. The lawyer for the seven, Jean-Bernard Padare, told Reuters that the seven were free to collect their belongings from the courthouse. “They are happy, they are free,” said Padare. “It’s the end.”

A French charity, Zoe’s Ark, had arranged for the 103 children to be flown out of Chad in an attempt to rescue them from the humanitarian crisis created as a result of the neighbouring Darfur conflict. However, Chadian officials have since described the operation as “kidnapping” and “extortion”, while the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees revealed that many of the children involved were not orphans.

According to Radio France, Eric Breteau, the founder of Zoe’s Ark charity, spoke at a pretrial hearing in N’Djamena, Chad and stated that the seven released Europeans had not been involved with the charity’s plans.

Ten other Europeans are still being held in Chad and are facing child abduction and fraud charges.

bookmark_borderThe Technology Of Peer To Peer (P2 P) Downloads

By Peter Nisbet

It was just about two decades ago that an online technology called Peer-to-Peer evolved. Also known popularly and in short as P2P, it refers to the connection of 2 computers or 2 network systems via the internet. In P2P downloads, there is no intermediary server involved; the 2 computers are the server and the client.

Their roles change depending on which of them is downloading and which is uploading. Sometime, both actions can happen simultaneously so that each computer becomes a server as well as a client. All you need for P2P downloading is only a simple internet connection and Peer-to-Peer software, which is readily available online, frequently in the form of a membership service.

Napster:

One of the pioneers in this field is Napster, which was developed in 1999, soon after the MP3 digitally compressed format of music became popularly accepted. Napster developed a kind of software that enabled users to connect to one another freely, but the connection was done in a rather cumbersome manner. The server (Napster) would match a user’s request for downloads with other users’ availability, and then the two parties would be connected through a telephone switchboard!

However, this scheme was destined to become a hit since the more the people that downloaded, the greater the availability of downloads. By 2001, Napster P2P membership had grown to over one million, with over 20 million files available for download.

However, as the Napster Company expanded and became more popular, they faced many lawsuits, especially from the Record Industry Association of America, and even from bands and artists who filed lawsuits against Napster for fear that their CD sales and royalties will be adversely affected.

Napster were eventually forced to close, and then restarted in a different format, charging for copyrighted downloads, the free provision of which was the reason for their original demise. Napster’s weakness was that they were the central server through which all downloads were made, and hence could be targeted as being legally responsible for those that were downloaded illegally.

We will now discuss briefly a few of the most outstanding Peer-to-Peer server companies operating today:

Kazaa:

Kazaa is one of the earliest to descend on the P2P scene. It provides facilities for search and downloading of files from Kazaa users and sources of shared premium content. It uses a process that makes your searches very fast, and this is possible because it connects to “supermodes” which are computers or networks with very high internet speeds. If a required file cannot be found, Kazaa’s “Search Agent” will automatically perform searches every 30 minutes for the next 24 hours to look for the file.

Limewire:

Limewire is one of the open source P2P programs. It has a number of great features, such as unlimited simultaneous searches, integrated chat, “swarm downloads” from multiple hosts, and many more advanced search options. However, only the paid Pro version offers download speeds worth considering.

BitTorrent:

This is one of the latest and most popular Peer-to-Peer file distribution programs. To access the BitTorrent Network for downloading, you have to download the BitTorrent Client which is available in over 20 languages. Once the set-up is complete, you will be in the elite company of over 70 million users who can upload and download at will, not only music and videos but also entire movies at incredible speeds.

You can actually complete the download and watch the movie while it is still running at its original destination! However, such fantastic speeds are attainable only with a broadband internet connection. Due to its excellent speed and other highly favorable features, millions of viewers are downloading original films, videos and music freely, and this has led to many protests and law suits for infringement of provisions of copyright and intellectual property laws. Its weakness is that you don’t not receive the entire movie from one client, but only parts from each of a number of them and for this reason it sometimes fails.

BearShare:

Its free edition has many useful P2P features, including MP3 and WAV audio sound files sharing and a messenger service for chatting. It used to use the same Gnutella network as Limewire, but no longer.

Ares:

Ares makes it possible for you to access the shared folders of other users for searching images, videos, sounds, documents, software and other types of files. Users can decide to share or keep their files or folders as private. It can handle Bittorrent and Shoutcast, and is based on the Gnutella open source software.

Morpheus:

Morpheus has features for the elimination of spyware, video and audio streaming, and support for BitTorrent, podcasts, iTunes, parental controls, and integrated playlist development, among other advanced options. Another novel feature that is incorporated in its latest version is a tool for the detection of copyrighted material.

Although peer-to-peer file sharing services have got a bad press at the moment due to illegal use to download copyrighted movies and music, the p2p software itself is not illegal. It is the way that some people use that creates the problem. However, many musicians make a lot of money due to people downloading tracks and then going out and buying either the albums, or tickets for live shows.

I would think twice about complaining were I them, because they could lose a lot of potential fans by complaining about what to them is a mere drop in the bucket. I have yet to read about a singer or musician who has become poor through music downloads.

In saying that, there is a lot of debate and confusion surrounding the legality of downloading copyrighted material. Apart from the companies that make P2P file sharing possible, many individual users have also been taken to court to face charges, and it is in your interest to use the utmost discretion as to what you download and from what sources you download files. It is also fact that those that have been prosecuted are a very miniscule minority.

However, you are advised not to download copyrighted material, and use the software for the originally intended purpose.

California meat packing firm recalls 143M pounds of beef

Sunday, February 17, 2008

I am dismayed at the in-humane handling of cattle that has resulted in the violation of food safety regulations at the Hallmark/Westland Meat Packing Company.

In a press release today, California-based Hallmark/Westland Meat Packing Co. indicated that it has voluntarily recalled just over 143 million pounds (65 million kilograms) of raw and frozen beef products, which is considered to be the largest single recall of beef products in U.S. history. The move follows an investigation by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) into allegations of animal cruelty and mishandling of cattle destined for the human food chain.

The USDA’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) had determined that beef products produced by the Chino, California company were unfit for human consumption as the cattle had not received “complete and proper inspection.”

The recall has been designated as Class II, which the USDA describes as “a health hazard situation where there is a remote probability of adverse health consequences from the use of the product.”

On Friday, Secretary of Agriculture Ed Schafer indicated that charges had been laid against employees of the plant alleged to have taken part in the mistreatment of cattle. “Today [Friday], the San Bernardino District Attorney filed felony animal cruelty charges against two employees who were terminated by Hallmark/Westland Meat Packing Company,” said Schafer. “It is regrettable that these animals were mistreated and I am encouraged and supportive of these actions by the San Bernardino District Attorney in response to this mistreatment.”

The USDA learned of the possible inhumane handling of non-ambulatory (disabled) cattle at the packing plant on January 30 and has since suspended activities at the plant. “We continue to conduct a thorough investigation into whether any violations of food safety or additional humane handling regulations have occurred,” said Secretary Schafer in a press release. “On February 8, our Office of the Inspector General took the lead on the investigation. At that time, USDA extended the administrative hold on Hallmark/Westland Meat Packing Company products for the National School Lunch Program, the Emergency Food Assistance Program and the Food Distribution Program on Indian Reservations while the investigation continues,” said Schafer.

The FSIS reported that Hallmark/Westland had not contacted the FSIS public health veterinarian, as required, when cattle became ill or disabled after undergoing ante-mortem (slaughter) inspection, putting the company out of compliance with FSIS regulations. “Because the cattle did not receive complete and proper inspection FSIS has determined them to be unfit for human food and the company is conducting a recall,” explained Secretary Schafer.

The cruelty charges stem from an undercover video that reportedly showed sick cattle being moved by crews using forklifts.

“Words cannot accurately express how shocked and horrified I was at the depictions contained on the video that was taken by an individual who worked at our facility from October 3 thru November 14, 2007,” said Steve Mendell, President, Westland Meat Co. and Hallmark Meat Packing. “We have taken swift action regarding the two employees identified on the video and have already implemented aggressive measures to ensure all employees follow our humane handling policies and procedures. We are also cooperating with the USDA investigators on the allegations of inhumane handling treatment which is a serious breech of our company’s policies and training.”

The USDA stressed that it is “extremely unlikely” that the cattle involved were at risk for Bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) or mad-cow disease due to the employment of multiple safeguards. The USDA felt the recall was required, however, as the plant had allegedly violated USDA regulations.

The recall involves raw and frozen beef products produced on various dates from February 1, 2006 to February 2, 2008. For further information about the recall, consumers, media, and distributors are encouraged to contact Hallmark/Westland’s Plant Manager Stan Mendell or Food Safety Consultant Steve Sayer at (909) 590-3340 or the FSIS website, www.fsis.usda.gov.

Tsunami exposes ancient ruins in India

Friday, March 18, 2005Probably one of the first good things to come out of the 2004 Tsunami in Asia, ancient ruins were discovered in India. Fishermen along the shores report seeing the ruins along the shoreline near Mahabalipuram when the waters receded just prior to the arrival of the tsunami. Mahabalipuram is a port city of South India, dating back to the 7th century, around 60 km south from the city of Chennai in Tamil Nadu.

The fishermen reported a complex consisting of ancient temples. Some mention seeing at least 20 distinct temples, and hundreds of refrigerator-sized blocks. The walls were covered with barnacles, coral and mud. Local folklore tells of an ancient port in the area.

On the shore, three structures consisting of elaborate carvings in the shape of animals were uncovered. The structures appear to have been covered in sand, which had been wiped away by the force of the tsunami. The structures appear to belong to a port city built in the 7th century, said T. Satyamurthy, a senior archaeologist with the Archaeological Survey of India. The sculptures, representing an elephant, a lion and a flying horse, were commonly used during the Pallava dynasty, which ran from the 4th to the 9th century, archeologists say.

The temples along the shores of Mahabalipuram are already a famous feature of the city, and have been declared a UNESCO World Heritage site. Legend has it that the city was home to seven pagodas. Underwater excavations of the area by the archaeological society, run by the Indian government and navy divers, began on Thursday.

eBay removes Canadian town’s listing of sperm whale carcass

Thursday, May 8, 2014

Citing violations of its policy regarding “Marine mammal items”, eBay terminated an online listing on Monday by the town of Cape St. George, Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada, for a 40 ft (12 m) sperm whale carcass reportedly beached upon its shores about a week prior.

With an initial asking price of 99 cents, bidding for the carcass reportedly rose to C$238.03 within 15 bids. Reports variously state the final price of the whale, prior to the removal of the listing from the auction site on Monday at about 2:30pm, was C$2,025 or C$2,075. Listed in eBay’s “really weird” category, the carcass was considered by eBay to be an example of “items made from marine mammals regardless of when the product was made”, which are prohibited as per site rules.

Following a council meeting on Sunday in the town of 950 residents, Cape St. George’s mayor, Peter Fenwick, put the whale up on the auction site in a bid to have it removed from the town’s premises, citing a lack of cooperation from provincial and federal government officials on the matter. “It’s your problem, you solve it”, Fenwick recounted to The Globe and Mail (TGaM) as the response he received from them. Apart from eBay, Kijiji was also suggested as another avenue by which to sell the carcass.

Fenwick told CTV News, several years prior another sperm whale measuring 15 ft was beached in the area, but disappeared without incident, an act Fenwick attributed to be the work of Fisheries and Oceans Canada. “This time”, he remarked, “the authorities have told us that it’s our whale, it’s our responsibility to get rid of it.”

On putting the carcass for sale, Fenwick remarked, “We knew we had to do something with it and this seemed to be the least expensive way of disposing of it.” In a news release, Fenwick highlighted a possible use for the carcass, particularly its bones. “The 40 foot sperm whale will make a spectacular exhibit once the fat and muscle is removed, and the town is asking museums and other organizations that could use a whale skeleton to contact the town for further details.”

On retaining the whale himself, Fenwick stated, “As a town we would dearly love to keep the whale and put it on exhibit in the town but the cost of such a venture would be hard to justify.” Fenwick told TGaM the whale was “in half decent shape”. “This one looks like it died very recently and hasn’t decomposed much”, which Fenwick suggested elsewhere was due to the whale’s present location, partially submerged in near-freezing water. However, Fenwick noted its close proximity to a residential area, saying homeowners who lived there were “very interested in seeing the whale gone.”

eBay was not the only organization who barred the sale from taking place. “We also got threatened by the federal department of the environment, and told to pull the ad off or they would prosecute us”, said Fenwick on the opposition he said he received from Environment Canada, which viewed the sale as contravening a federal act designed to protect endangered species. “I received a call from the federal department of the environment saying that you’re not allowed to sell any parts of sperm whales, even if they’re dead.” he added. “So I said, ‘Oh that’s very good, I’m glad to hear that, now can you send somebody over here to get rid of it for us?'” Fenwick’s request was met with a negative response from Environment Canada.

“They’ve got to sort it out somehow. The uncertainty means it just sort of sits there and rots.” Once decomposition sets in, Fenwick remarked the carcass would become a “real nuisance”. “I don’t know if you’ve ever seen a whale that’s been rotting on the beach for a couple of months — actually sometimes you can’t see it for the clouds of flies around it — but you can smell it for about a mile”, he added.

On finding alternate means to dispose of the carcass, Wayne Ledwell, a member of Newfoundland’s Whale Release and Strandings, suggested the whale be towed out to a remote area. “They need to do that right away, when they come in and they’re fresh,” said Ledwell. “No one wants to go touch them … everything becomes gooey and slippery and you can’t stand up on the whale and it gets on your boots and you can’t get the smell off and then you go home and the dog rolls in it and you get it in your kitchen and you curse the whales, and you curse the government and … it becomes a mess.” Fenwick said they’d considered the idea, enlisting a local fisherman who, however, judged his engine too small for the job.

Previously, blue whale carcasses washed ashore in the towns of Trout River and Rocky Harbour, located about 150 km further north, and were taken by Royal Ontario Museum for preservation of the skeletons. Fenwick suggested the sperm whale carcass in his town might also meet a similar fate, as the sperm whale’s status as the largest toothed whale might prove to be a drawing attraction for such a facility.

Regarding what he plans to do next with the carcass, Fenwick said “If we’re not allowed to sell it, we’re willing to drop our 99 cent price down to a zero.” He said he hoped some eBay bidder stays interested in the whale. “We’ll be glad to talk to them about giving them the whale. We’re hoping that’s not illegal.” He also said he hoped the publicity from the town’s predicament, which garnered national attention, and its unusual means of finding a solution, would draw in someone interested in taking the whale off his hands at their own expense.

Should the whale fall under new ownership, Fenwick advised it be moved away from the town to a beach devoid of people, and the blubber left as food for seagulls, insects, and other predators. He estimated “It’ll probably take a year or so to get down to the skeleton.” As monetary gain was reportedly not what the town cared about, Fenwick was willing to offer the carcass for free, though one report noted money raised from the listing could have gone towards the building of a skate park.

The listing on eBay, as put up by Fenwick, read:

This 40 foot sperm whale rolled up on the beach last week. The actual seller is the town of Cape St. George which is responsible for disposing of it before it starts to decay. Once the fat and flesh is removed you have a spectacular 40 foot skeleton of the largest toothed whale in the world, great for museums and other attractions. To prevent it rotting in the town it can be towed to isolated beaches on the Port au Port Peninsula to allow the seagulls and other birds to remove the flesh. Call 709-644-2290 or 709-649-7070 for more details.

Please note the successful bidder will have to remove the whale within 30 days

bookmark_borderPa Auto Insurance Laws Did You Know About These No Fault Insurance Laws?

By R Daniel Williams

Getting your car insured in PA is tricky. Actually, we mean you need to be aware of some legal issues if you really want to make the most out of your PA auto insurance policy. The law of Pennsylvania demands that all automobiles are covered by at least a minimal level of auto insurance. Now, the law specifies some special category of PA auto insurance coverage and some specific limits are set.

Let’s take a closer look at the supposed no fault clause. Some people say it’s a misnomer somehow. The laws in Pennsylvania in this regard are smart combination of the “no-fault” and “at fault” approach. Basically, laws in PA let a driver to pick one between no fault policies and the customary coverage, despite there’re mandates in PA law.

For an example, a No Fault policy in PA auto insurance law applies straight to all sorts of medical expenditures or loss of wages that incurred due to a car accident. Expenses for every driver involved in that accident will be covered by dint of their respective individual policy. And such provisions apply disregarding who among the drivers were responsible for the auto accident. Nevertheless, reports are taken from authorities, witnesses and on duty police. Like we just said, the costs are bore only through the policies that each insured holds, instead of the traditional approach of bearing those expenses through the PA auto insurance policy of that driver who was found responsible for an accident.

On the other hand, if your PA auto insurance policy holds an At Fault provision, things could be a lot different. In this case, compensations are paid for the pain and/or suffering of the injured or other types of losses which are not in any way linked to those billed expenses. That means, when a person found to be responsible for the accident due to his or her negligence, will have to compensate the injured people since they were harmed by his faults that lead to the accident.

But no matter what your PA auto insurance policy holds, you can’t do without it usually, as the state law makes it mandatory of all car owners to have a minimum level of coverage for their vehicle. Putting it straight and simple, drivers are required to carry at least some liability insurance coverage. This is meant for protecting PA drivers from getting financially handicapped because of the huge claims that might be filed against them if they’re at fault on the event of an accident.

Just in case you didn’t know, the law related to PA auto insurance requires that a minimum amount of $15,000 coverage is held for a person and $30,000 of coverage is held for each incident. This generally is called the 15/30 coverage clause. According to the state law of PA, it’s also obligatory that you have a minimal no-fault coverage that will cover all the medical bills for you when you’re injured in an accident. The minimal coverage here is $5,000.

Hearing testimony; U.S. soldiers took turns raping 14 year old Iraqi girl before killing her

Wednesday, August 9, 2006

In testimony given before a U.S. military hearing, criminal investigator Benjamin Bierce narrated his account of how an incident involving five soldiers involved the serial rape of a 14-year-old Iraqi girl prior to shooting her. The hearing will determine whether four current U.S. soldiers have to face a court martial hearing; an additional former soldier allegedly involved in the incident, Steven D. Green, was recently discharged from the military and has pleaded not guilty to rape and murder charges in federal court in Kentucky.

According to Bierce, a U.S. Special Agent investigating the incident, the brutal attack which saw Abeer Qassim al-Janabi slain and her parents and younger sister murdered was premeditated. Citing a sworn statement from Army Specialist James Barker, the five accused were said to have plotted the rape whilst drinking whisky and playing cards.According to Agent Bierce, Spc. Barker said that Pte. Spielman grabbed the girl while Pte. Green seized her father and they then took them into the house and Sgt. Cortez and Spc. Barker followed them inside.

Pte. Green supposedly led the father, mother and younger sister into the bedroom and closed the door, while the teenage girl remained in the living room with the other Americans, Spc. Barker’s statement said.

Sgt. Cortez then allegedly pushed the girl to the floor, pulled up her dress and tore off her underwear while she was struggling, Bierce said, again citing Spc. Barker’s statement. Sgt. Cortez appeared to then rape Abeer and afterward, Spc. Barker tried to rape the girl, the statement said.

Then Pte. Green came out of the bedroom with an AK-47 rifle and announced: “They’re all dead. I just killed them,” according to Spc. Barker’s statement.

Then Sgt. Cortez held Abeer down while Pte. Green raped the girl; according to Spc. Barker’s statement. Pte. Green then picked up the AK-47 and shot Abeer once, waited, and then shot her a few more times, the U.S. official, Agent Bierce, said, quoting from Spc. Barker’s statement.

Spc. Barker said that he then poured kerosene lamp fuel on the girl’s body but Barker did not say who set it on fire.

Gary Griesmyer, another Special Agent, quoted Sgt. Cortez as telling him that the teenage girl was crying and talking in Arabic and that Spc. Barker told her to “shut up.”

Private Justin Watt testified that Pte. Howard told him before the incident that Pte. Green, Sgt. Cortez and Spc. Barker were planning to rape a girl, and Pte. Howard was going to be the lookout.

Watt testified that he heard Mr. Green say, “I want to kill and hurt a lot of Iraqis.” Green has been discharged from the military and has pleaded not guilty in a federal court in Kentucky where he will stand trial; he will not be facing a court martial regardless of what occurrs in the Baghdad hearing.

“If you have the power to make something right, you should do it. Investigation is not my job. But if something went down — something terrible like that — then it’s my obligation to come forward,” Watt said.

Watt also said life for some of the soldiers in the B Company, 1st Battalion, 502nd Infantry Regiment, was horrible while they were manning a military post in nearby Yusufiyah. Some lived in a “dilapidated, abandoned water treatment facility” he said.

Pfc. Watt, who is identified as the whistle-blowing soldier who disclosed the attack during a counseling session, also said; “I feared for my safety at the TCP (traffic control point). It’s like this, I find out that guys in my squad, guys I trusted with my life, are allegedly responsible for one of the most brutal rapes/murders I’ve ever seen. And everyone has a weapon and grenades.”

Pfc. Justin Cross testified that deadly attacks by insurgents sapped morale and raised combat stress in the U.S. Army unit that included the soldiers accused of raping and murdering Abeer. He said that the “mentally draining” living conditions of the combat unit was a factor.

“It drives you nuts. You feel like every step you might get blown up. You just hit a point where you’re like, ‘If I die today, I die.’ You’re just walking a death walk.” Pfc. Cross told the hearing.

An article 32 hearing, like this, seeks to determine if a soldiers should face court martial. Its similar to that of a preliminary hearing or a grand jury proceeding in civilian law.
