California meat packing firm recalls 143M pounds of beef

Sunday, February 17, 2008

I am dismayed at the in-humane handling of cattle that has resulted in the violation of food safety regulations at the Hallmark/Westland Meat Packing Company.

In a press release today, California-based Hallmark/Westland Meat Packing Co. indicated that it has voluntarily recalled just over 143 million pounds (65 million kilograms) of raw and frozen beef products, which is considered to be the largest single recall of beef products in U.S. history. The move follows an investigation by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) into allegations of animal cruelty and mishandling of cattle destined for the human food chain.

The USDA’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) had determined that beef products produced by the Chino, California company were unfit for human consumption as the cattle had not received “complete and proper inspection.”

The recall has been designated as Class II, which the USDA describes as “a health hazard situation where there is a remote probability of adverse health consequences from the use of the product.”

On Friday, Secretary of Agriculture Ed Schafer indicated that charges had been laid against employees of the plant alleged to have taken part in the mistreatment of cattle. “Today [Friday], the San Bernardino District Attorney filed felony animal cruelty charges against two employees who were terminated by Hallmark/Westland Meat Packing Company,” said Schafer. “It is regrettable that these animals were mistreated and I am encouraged and supportive of these actions by the San Bernardino District Attorney in response to this mistreatment.”

The USDA learned of the possible inhumane handling of non-ambulatory (disabled) cattle at the packing plant on January 30 and has since suspended activities at the plant. “We continue to conduct a thorough investigation into whether any violations of food safety or additional humane handling regulations have occurred,” said Secretary Schafer in a press release. “On February 8, our Office of the Inspector General took the lead on the investigation. At that time, USDA extended the administrative hold on Hallmark/Westland Meat Packing Company products for the National School Lunch Program, the Emergency Food Assistance Program and the Food Distribution Program on Indian Reservations while the investigation continues,” said Schafer.

The FSIS reported that Hallmark/Westland had not contacted the FSIS public health veterinarian, as required, when cattle became ill or disabled after undergoing ante-mortem (slaughter) inspection, putting the company out of compliance with FSIS regulations. “Because the cattle did not receive complete and proper inspection FSIS has determined them to be unfit for human food and the company is conducting a recall,” explained Secretary Schafer.

The cruelty charges stem from an undercover video that reportedly showed sick cattle being moved by crews using forklifts.

“Words cannot accurately express how shocked and horrified I was at the depictions contained on the video that was taken by an individual who worked at our facility from October 3 thru November 14, 2007,” said Steve Mendell, President, Westland Meat Co. and Hallmark Meat Packing. “We have taken swift action regarding the two employees identified on the video and have already implemented aggressive measures to ensure all employees follow our humane handling policies and procedures. We are also cooperating with the USDA investigators on the allegations of inhumane handling treatment which is a serious breech of our company’s policies and training.”

The USDA stressed that it is “extremely unlikely” that the cattle involved were at risk for Bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) or mad-cow disease due to the employment of multiple safeguards. The USDA felt the recall was required, however, as the plant had allegedly violated USDA regulations.

The recall involves raw and frozen beef products produced on various dates from February 1, 2006 to February 2, 2008. For further information about the recall, consumers, media, and distributors are encouraged to contact Hallmark/Westland’s Plant Manager Stan Mendell or Food Safety Consultant Steve Sayer at (909) 590-3340 or the FSIS website, www.fsis.usda.gov.

A woman found herself £226,000 richer, one the biggest ever payouts to a female client, after placing a series of bets on last weeks Champions League games, despite knowing nothing about football.

Kathrin Rotmann, 33, placed a £1,000 bet based on her tactics of supporting “teams that are strong and winning”.

“I am delighted. I only ever bet on football — last year I won £35,000 with one bet. I just keep a track of those teams which are playing well and bet on them. It was very exciting when the results went my way.”

She was delighted when she saw her bet multiply in front of her eyes, when her 226-1 odds of wins for Arsenal, Man United, Rangers, Slavia Prague, Barcelona, Roma, Fenerbahce and PSV come in on television.

The exact amount won was £226,834.36.

bookmark_borderWhat Is Ethics And Corporate Compliance In Healthcare All About: 7 Points

Submitted by: Greg Garner

Ethics and Corporate Compliance training courses promote better communication, increased security, and efficient decision-making within healthcare facilities. Listed below is some information on what these types of training courses really entail and why it is crucial that medical employees attend it.

1. Ethics and corporate compliance training courses designed for hospitals and medical clinics deal with a variety of topics, most of them concerning legal aspects. Depending on the company offering the training course, these topics include, but are not limited to: fraud and abuse laws, the stark law, the false claims act, the anti kickback statute, mail and wire fraud, federal exclusion, the perils of non-compliance, and civil and criminal penalties. The exact topics may differ a little, but these are the most important points covered.

2. These training classes help reinforce the importance of ethics within the work place and they promote responsibility for both staff members and senior management. They are important for healthcare facilities because they teach employees how to act right from a legal point of view and they help prevent situations such as breaching of patient confidentiality, harassment, identity theft, and so on.

3. Ethics and compliance training is a course which hospital employees and management have to take and pass for their credentialing. Most companies that offer such training have online interactive platforms which are easy and fast to use by applicants. The courses may be presented in Adobe flash format or they may be text based with optional audio narration.

4. After the member views, reads or listens to the course, he or she is required to pass a test, usually a multiple answers one, before being able to receive the certificate. Some training courses offer members the possibility to take the test multiple times, with absolutely no pressure.

5. A company offering ethics and corporate compliance training classes for healthcare professionals may offer extra advantages and features, such as a member friendly interface, real life scenarios, case studies, and the ability to directly print the certificate upon completion of the course.

6. As a manager, you can sign up all of the staff members that need to complete the ethics and corporate compliance training and you may even get a discount for a certain number of people subscribed. Hospitals and other healthcare facilities usually also receive an organization discount.

7. The great advantage of online training courses in general is that you gain instant access to all the courses you need, from the moment you sign up a pay the inscription fee. Additionally, because healthcare training course have to comply with certain regulations, they are constantly updated, for no additional fee.

Middle Eastern troops enter Bahrain after protests

Tuesday, March 15, 2011

Troops from Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates have arrived in Bahrain at the government’s request after major protests on Sunday.

An estimated 1,000 Saudi Arabian troops entered the country early Monday, followed by around 500 troops from the UAE. The troops entered as part of a broader deployment by the Cooperation Council for the Arab States of the Gulf (GCC), a regional group of six countries. It is unclear what purpose the troops are serving, though speculation is that they will guard major infrastructure facilities.

Al Wefaq, the leading opposition party, said it considered “the entry of any soldier or military machinery into the Kingdom of Bahrain’s air, sea or land territories a blatant occupation” and that the presence of foreign troops “puts the Bahraini people in real danger, and threatens them with an undeclared war by armed troops.”

Statements from the US government, a major Bahrain ally, said that “[t]his is not an invasion of a country” and that it urged both the Bahrain government and the GCC “to exercise restraint” and “act in a way that supports dialogue instead of undermining it.”

An official of Iranian Foreign Ministry also criticized the Saudi invasion of Bahrain, saying “it is surprising to see that immediately after the recent trip of the US Defense Secretary [Robert Gates] we see the intensified use of violence against the people of Bahrain.”

The intervention came a day after the country saw the worst protests since February, as several dozen people were injured in clashes with police.

2006 U.S. Congressional Elections

Wednesday, November 8, 2006

As of 10:00 p.m EST November 8, 2006, the Democratic Party is projected to have gained control of both the United States House of Representatives and the United States Senate in the 2006 United States general elections. MSNBC projects that the Democrats now control 234 seats in the House of Representatives, 16 more seats than the 218 needed to control the House of Representatives as all 435 seats were up for election. In the Senate, where the balance of power is closer, one-third of all seats were up for grab. As of 10:00 p.m. EST, AP and Reuters were projecting that the Democrats had picked up all six seats they needed to retake the Senate, including the seats of incumbents Rick Santorum (Penn.), Lincoln Chafee (R.I.), Jim Talent (Missouri), Mike DeWine (Ohio), John Tester (Montana), and Jim Webb (VA). The Tester victory by less than 3,000 votes was projected at approximately 2 p.m. EST after the State of Montana announced the results of overnight recounts. Democrat Jim Webb has prevailed in that race by slightly more than 7,000 votes, though his opponent has not conceded and a recount may still occur.

Bathurst, Australia’s new hospital to be almost doubled in size

Thursday, February 2, 2006

Bathurst Regional Council, the local government responsible for the city of Bathurst and its surrounds in Central Western New South Wales, Australia yesterday revealed it had received a development application for the new Bathurst Base Hospital.

The new hospital is to be built behind the current hospital on the same site and is expected to cost the New South Wales government AUD96 million. The Bathurst Hospital will be the first in the Bathurst-Orange-Bloomfield redevelopment project.

The new hospital will have 149 beds, up from 85 for the current hospital. The hospital will also feature a mental health unit – previously psychiatric patients had to travel to Orange to the Bloomfield Hospital for treatment.

The Bathurst Hospital is expected to have state-of-the art facilities and will share some services with the to be constructed Orange Base Hospital.

The Bathurst Regional Council has approved the demolition of 12 buildings on the hospital site for enabling works. The hospital site is heritage listed although council decided that as the buildings do not contribute to the streetscape they may be demolished.

The demolitions are expected to take place late next month and will take around six weeks to complete. A temporary driveway will then be built to replace the current service entry for food and linen as it will become part of the work site.

Upon completion of the new hospital, the current ward block will be demolished leaving the original building from the late 19th century intact. The original building is expected to become an education centre and consulting rooms.

The original building was opened in 1834. Since then the facility has undergone numerous upgrades and add-ons, with the present ward block being opened in stages from 1978 to 1982.

Other buildings expected to be retained include the Daffodil Cottage (a cancer care centre) and the original Nurse’s quarters known as Poole House.

Secure your doors with your eye retina as an authentication

by

simonsss

If you might be wandering how you can secure your doors with your eye retina since it only been seen in hi-fi action movies or the movies of James bond which used his eye to open the door of very high voltage weapons or highly classified things. Nowadays technology has grown up very fast. Every day new technical things are being invented which we can imagine in dreams or can be seen in movies only. Each day there is an invention of new dangerous weapons and new technology to give security against these destroyers. Terrorism activities have also been improved and encouraged by some of the countries. Attacks on world trade center and Indian hotels are just recently seen example of these activities. We need to develop and adopt the new system which can service and protect us from these activities. In this case, biometric technology is an ultimate option to be adopted and adored by most of the organizations which require better security system.

Those days are gone where we hire few people for security at your offices, home and other sensitive places. In this hard economy time we have to think about something smarter which can save our money and can also provide better security. Now there is an era of automation. Everyone wants to have fast and automated system which serves better way. For the last decade of time, everything is becoming automated with new technology and device to fulfill all requirements. Automatic online shopping and transpiration are an ideal example to give. The same way, our security should be shifted to automated system which should deliver better functionality and better safety. Biometric technology and

Biometric Access Control

is the answer of new era security system which satisfies two main functionality which is better safety and less maintenance cost. Instead of talking about all aspect of security level, let s narrow down our discussion to in house and office security to restrict any un-authorized entry.

Let me explain you little introduction about biometric technology and the devices in which it can be integrated. Biometric technology is based on physical features of human being and some of the logical features. As an authentication, it uses Physical attributes like eye retina, finger prints, DNA and logical attributes like voice, key stroke and signature. All these features can be stored in central database by converting it into certain digital signal to compare at time of identification. As I said lets narrow down our discussion to access control system which can be integrated with biometric technology.

Security doors integrated with biometric technology are also known as biometric access control or security doors with biometric technology. As I said it comes with scanners which scans your eye retina and then store it further identification process. Whenever you need to go to the place with doors you have to give your identification by showing your eyes to scanner which scans your retina. If it finds matches in its database then its lets you through those doors otherwise it gives alarms or any signal according to your predefined setting. It also provides new registration if you have specified as per your requirement. Along with allowing or denying entry to specific place it also generates the well formed report for the entire day, month or year as per your specification. If you are using especially for your premises it can also work as pay roll time attendance system for your all employees who automatically generates report of entire month with all necessary required information and other calculations. This way doors with biometric access control gives better security and functionality at same price and maintenance.

It can be also integrated with other devices and can made systems like hr management system, time attendance system, visitor management system and face recognition system. All these security system operates on single authentication system which uses your eye retina and other attributes as an authentication.

Body of missing teenager Amber Dubois found

Monday, March 8, 2010

The skeletal remains of 14-year-old Escondido, California teenager Amber Dubois were found north of the Pala Indian Reservation Saturday morning, police said. Dubois disappeared February 13, 2009 while walking to Escondido High School. The San Diego County Medical Examiner’s office made a positive identification through dental records.

According to Escondido Police Chief Jim Maher, police were following a lead when they came across the remains. Maher declined to say what the lead was or to describe in detail the site where the remains were found. He also refused to reveal whether John Albert Gardner III, suspect in the murder of Chelsea King, is being linked to the Dubois case.

Amber’s father, Maurice Dubois, made a statement thanking those who had helped in the search for Amber. “The entire community, everybody who helped out with the search effort, and above all our huge volunteer corps, they are the most dedicated people and without them we couldn’t have done anything,” he said.

Arinze and Tettamanzi equal favorites as new Pope

Tuesday, April 5, 2005Irish betting shop chain, Paddy Power, is taking bets for a new Pope. The current front runners are Cardinal Francis Arinze of Nigeria and Cardinal Dionigi Tettamanzi of Italy, who have each been given odds of 11-4.

“Our feeling is, we held off a few days, and now the cardinals themselves are convening in Rome,” Darren Haines, a spokesman for Paddy Power said.

“We do it very much in the same way as a horse race,” Haines added, “Without sounding so callous, in a sense, we have contenders, and you very much rate the speculation on the contenders, very much by going on media reports in the religious press … Our trading manager is very clued up on this, though she hasn’t had divine intervention.”

Toothpaste fills cavities without drilling

Thursday, February 24, 2005

A paste containing synthetic tooth enamel can seal small cavities without drilling. Kazue Yamagishi and colleagues at the FAP Dental Institute in Tokyo say that the paste can repair small cavities in 15 minutes.

Currently, fillers don’t stick to such small cavities so dentists must drill bigger holes. Hydroxyapatite crystals, of which natural enamel is made, bond with teeth to repair tiny areas of damage.

Yamagishi and colleagues have tested their paste on a lower premolar tooth that showed early signs of decay. They found that the synthetic enamel merged with the natural enamel. The synthetic enamel also appears to make teeth stronger which will improve resistance to future decay. As with drilling, however, there is still the potential for pain: The paste is strongly acidic to encourage crystal growth and causes inflammation if it touches the gums.

The paste is reported in the journal Nature.
