Let’s take a look at some of the important stories of 2008. Links to the original Wikinews articles are in all the titles.

Colombian military spy plane crashes

Wednesday, February 18, 2009

According to media reports, a Colombian air force AC-47 (registration FAC1670) spy plane carrying five people has crashed near the Colombian city of La Dorada, in the department of Caldas.

All on board the plane are believed to have been killed, according to Colombia Reports. Among the dead, according to Monsters and Critics, are two technicians, a major and two second lieutenants. ABS-CBN News reports that the dead included three high ranking officials and two lower ranking ones.

Jorge Ballesteros, a Colombian air force official, says that the plane took off from an air force base in the city of Puerto Salgar and was on an exercise mission when it crashed. He also states that although it was on a training exercise, the plane was carrying bombs and machine guns.

A military team has been dispatched to the area to investigate the incident, but they have already put the blame on mechanical failure. Ballestero noted that investigators have ruled out a rebel attack and terrorism as possible causes.

AC-47’s have been used by the Colombian air force for nearly 20 years, most of which were donated from the United States. They were provided to the country in an attempt to fight the illegal drug market and to defend citizens and the military against rebel attacks. They are also used to gather intelligence and come equipped with a state-of-the-art communications system, radar and infrared detection systems.

bookmark_borderWhat Is The Lemon Law?

byadmin

What exactly is the Lemon Law? The Federal Government passed a Lemon Law in 1975 and since that time every state in this country has passed their own. These laws were created to protect buyers in cases where vehicle manufacturers failed to deliver on the promises they made to you. Whenever you buy a new, and in some states a used vehicle, the manufacturer makes certain promises to you (the warranty) pertaining to the quality of vehicle. If a car is continually in the shop for repairs, the statute protects you and can even require that the maker of the vehicle provide you with a replacement car, a cash payment, or even allow you to return the vehicle with no penalty.

Does the Lemon Law Only Apply to Cars?

The Dealer is not a Lawyer

So you brought your car into the dealership for repairs yet again and when you mentioned to the service manager that you think it might be a lemon, he told you that your vehicle does not qualify. What you need to know is that his job is to try and fix your car and make you happy with what the dealership sold you. He is not an attorney and doesn’t have the experience to advise you on this matter. Only a qualified Lemon Law attorney such as those at Krohn & Moss, Ltd. Consumer Law Center® can tell you whether you have a valid claim or not. Visit www.yourlemonlawrights.com for more details.

byAlma Abell

Halitosis, more commonly known as bad breath, is a frequent “inconvenience” for most. Its origin is oral in 70% of cases. Dentists in Waikoloa make the diagnosis, provide effective treatment and, in some special cases, refer the patient to a colleague for treatment. All mouth odors are not bad; only those that are characterized by bad breath are problems. It is also necessary to distinguish between the person believed to have bad breath (psychiatric disease, neurological disorder) and the person that actually has halitosis.

The practitioner must truly examine their patient, undertaking an extensive investigation. The professional must offer an effective solution and will try to determine whether halitosis has an oral origin or not. There are plenty of causes concerning non-oral halitosis, including ENT disorders (sinusitis, tonsillitis, etc.), digestive (gastrointestinal reflux, liver disorders and so on), lung issues (abscess or tumors), renal, endocrine (diabetes and menstrual disorders), metabolic (dehydration and the like), etc. These include the special cases where onion and garlic compounds are exhaled through the lungs and also includes tobacco users. Click here for more information.

Many bacteria, not necessarily pathogenic, present themselves in the oral cavity by degrading proteins (from food, saliva, buccal cells). Other odorous compounds are also involved. A clinical and radiological examination can distinguish:

  • Gingivitis (gum inflammation) or periodontitis (deeper periodontal tissue damage with loss of tooth-supporting bone)
  • Cavities and dental infections
  • Inadequate, defective restorations that promote the retention of food debris
  • Smells emitted by the tongue coating

What solutions are available to combat halitosis? First, Dentists in Waikoloa will dramatize, reassure and propose a suitable response that involves:

  • Treating tooth decay, replacing defective restorations, performing periodontal treatment, removing plaque, etc.
  • Improving oral hygiene by brushing, using dental floss, an irrigator, antimicrobial mouthwash.
  • Make simple lifestyle changes like eating habits, try to stop smoking, drink more water throughout the day, especially right before bed.
  • Therapeutic solutions are multiple and often curative.

Bad breath should no longer be regarded as a shameful and insoluble problem. The best way to fight this issue and its social consequences is to see your local dentist. Any dentist may, after questioning you and performing a precise examination, offer you sound treatment. For more information, contact Brian S. Kubo DDS today.

Wikinews interviews World Wide Web co-inventor Robert Cailliau

Thursday, August 16, 2007

The name Robert Cailliau may not ring a bell to the general public, but his invention is the reason why you are reading this: Dr. Cailliau together with his colleague Sir Tim Berners-Lee invented the World Wide Web, making the internet accessible so it could grow from an academic tool to a mass communication medium. Last January Dr. Cailliau retired from CERN, the European particle physics lab where the WWW emerged.

Wikinews offered the engineer a virtual beer from his native country Belgium, and conducted an e-mail interview with him (which started about three weeks ago) about the history and the future of the web and his life and work.

Wikinews: At the start of this interview, we would like to offer you a fresh pint on a terrace, but since this is an e-mail interview, we will limit ourselves to a virtual beer, which you can enjoy here.

Robert Cailliau: Yes, I myself once (at the 2nd international WWW Conference, Chicago) said that there is no such thing as a virtual beer: people will still want to sit together. Anyway, here we go.

Mexican police official, bodyguard shot dead at restaurant

Thursday, June 26, 2008

Gunmen today opened fire in a Mexico City restaurant, killing a top police official in charge of monitoring the country’s illegal drug trade, as well as one of his bodyguards, Mexican officials said. The attack is the latest waged against authorities attempting to fight Mexico’s powerful drug cartels.

Security officials in Mexico City say the attack occurred as Igor Labastida Calderón, commander of the federal police‘s Traffic and Contraband division, was eating lunch with one of his bodyguards, Jose Maria Ochoa. According to Minerva Amado, spokesperson for the attorney general’s office, two unknown subjects got out of a black vehicle, entered the restaurant, and opened fire on Labastida Calderón.

Reports differ on who else was injured in the attack. Amado said two other bodyguards were injured and hospitalized, while Mexico City newspaper El Universal reports that three civilians were injured.

The motive for the attack remains unclear. No arrests have been made so far, as police continue to search for the assailants. Federal police have refused to comment.

President Felipe Calderón has sent over 20,000 troops throughout Mexico in an attempt to take back areas controlled by the country’s drug cartels. Since Calderón took office in December 2006, more than 4,000 people have been killed by these drug cartels, allegedly including federal police chief Édgar Millán Gómez, whose May death was attributed to the Sinaloa Cartel.
