One of the most important financial lessons a person can learn is to live within their means. The problem many people with excessive debt have is spending as much (or more) than they make – and then having to lean on credit cards and other sources of credit to make ends meet. Once you’ve gone beyond your “means”, it’s a vicious cycle that is extremely hard to break, because you’re basically start out in the red (or negative).

One of the most effective methods of saving money is learning how to live on less than you make. It’s a classic financial lesson that many people miss, and therefore end up deep in debt. It’s far too easy to charge a large purchase or numerous small purchases on a credit card, because you know the minimum payment will be affordable. The problem escalates as you increase the number of “minimum payments” you are required to make each month to the point that you can’t pay anything more than the minimum – and suddenly the interest and finance charges are eating your payments.

When you learn how to live on less than your income, you automatically make it possible to save money. You can use the difference in income and living expenses to create an emergency fund, save for your future, and pay for unexpected expenses with cash rather than credit.

Here are four basic tips for learning to live on 70% of your income, which means you can put 20% of your income in the savings vehicle of your choice:

1. Figure out what you’re currently spending money on by tracking every incoming and outgoing dollar for a full month. If you’re not already keeping a close eye on your spending, this will be an enlightening experience. If you find your income just isn’t enough, do something about it! If you’re spending too much on unnecessary items, do something about it!

2. Look at what you are spending your money on, for example – if you tend to spend a lot of money on coffee on the way to work, start making coffee at home. You’ll read this tip on every money saving blog and website you come across but the fact is, buying coffee out is something many people do without a second thought and the money absolutely adds up.

3. Learn how to make your favorite meals at home and avoid eating in restaurants or getting take-out. Doesn’t mean you can never have a treat, but for families who eat out frequently, you can use far less of your food budget by making food at home rather than going out.

4. Buy items in bulk whenever the prices are discounted for doing so and the items will not expire or be wasted. Good candidates for buying in bulk include paper towels, toilet paper, canned goods and juice.

In order to increase the amount of money you have available to save, you need to decrease the amount of income you’re using. Working toward the goal of living on 70% of your income (or less!) will help you grow a healthy savings account.

Celebrity chef John Burton Race charged with drink-driving in UK

The British celebrity chef John Burton Race has been charged with the offence of drink-driving.

The chef, who is famous for starring in such programmes as French Leave and Return of the Chef, was pulled over by police on the A379 road in the county of Devon, England. The location was near to his restaurant entitled, “The New Angel”. It was a routine check that took place in the early hours of Friday morning. After a breathalyser test, the chef was arrested for drink-driving. Another offence that he is being charged with is “resisting or obstructing a constable”, which means to resist arrest.

A Devon and Cornwall Constabulary spokeswoman released a statement to Sky News which said: “John Burton Race, 52, was arrested on October 30 at about 1am. He has been charged with driving or attempting to drive with excess alcohol and resisting or obstructing a constable in the execution of their duty.”

John has now been released on an unconditional bail. He is expected to appear before magistrates in a courtroom in Newton Abbot on November 17, 2009.

50 Italian parliamentarians call for global summit for “a new financial architecture”

A letter and motion to be debated by Italian Parliament this week calls for action to address speculative bubbles and potential future financial crashes in the global economy. The motion asks for a global summit similar to the 1944 Bretton Woods United Nations Monetary and Financial Conference, which gave us the IMF and World Bank.

The letter raises questions about the sustainability of current financial trends, based on the highly speculative nature of today’s markets. For example, according to the letter, “It is estimated that the entire financial bubble, counting all financial derivatives and all other forms of existing debt, is equal to about $400 trillion, compared to a worldwide GDP of slightly more than $40 trillion”.

Last years collapse of Italian dairy company Parmalat, with “14.3 billion euros that must still be accounted for”, is given as evidence for “a lack of effective tools and controls regarding financial operations”. Enron, which famously collapsed in November 2001 revealing faudulent accounting practices from previously respected accounting firm Arthur Andersen, is given as another example.

Oddly, the largest collapse on record, that of WorldCom, is not mentioned, though the set of examples is not purported to be exhaustive. A number of other crashes are mentioned: the LTCM fund, Argentine bonds, Cirio, and Finmatica.

The motion, linked to supporters of the Lyndon LaRouche movement, is signed by Parliamentarians Lettieri, Soro, Delbono, Tolotti, Widmann, Villani Miglietta, Rosato, Albertini, Morgando, Diana, Luigi Pepe, Damiani, Ostillio, De Brasi, Maccanico, Carbonella, Paola Mariani, Grandi, Pistone, Giovanni Bianchi, Giacco, Benvenuto, Piscitello, Camo, Realacci, Squeglia, Rocchi, Iannuzzi, Intini, Meduri, Santino Adamo Loddo, Boccia, Villari, Chianale, Siniscalchi, Sandi, Cusumano, Cennamo, Annunziata, Rotundo, Bonito, Buemi, Pennacchi, Fanfani, Tarantino, Rodeghiero, Angioni, Detomas, and Nesi.

Debate was scheduled for March 14-18.

Deadwood was located in a canyon called Deadwood Gulch for the many dead trees along the canyon walls that towered above it. The saga of lawless Deadwood began, appropriately enough, with an illegal settlement inside territory that had been promised by treaty to Native Americans. But once word got out that gold had been discovered in the Black Hills in 1874, the army was unable to stem the tide of would-be miners pouring into the Territory, and the population of Deadwood exploded practically overnight. By 1876, a million dollars in gold had been mined from the surrounding Black Hills.

During that same year, Deadwood would gain two of its most famous citizens–James Butler “Wild Bill” Hickcock, and “Calamity Jane. They, along with many other colorful characters walked the (often) lawless streets of Deadwood in its early days.

Hickock, a flamboyant character who carried two ivory-handled Navy Colt revolvers conspicuously mounted in butt-forward holsters, was already legendary for his skill with said Colt pistols. General George Custer, among others, said that Hickock was the fastest draw and best shot he’d ever seen. It was often said that he could draw and fire–unerringly hitting what he aimed at–faster than most men could even think about doing so. Part of his reputation was likely exaggeration, given the technical limitations of the revolvers of that day, but there has been ample testimony from numerous witnesses that he was both quick and deadly with a gun.

Having been fired from his job as marshal of Abilene, Kansas for his excessively violent style of law enforcement., Hickock took a job–along with Calamity Jane–as an outrider on a wagon train bearing a fresh shipment of prostitutes bound for Deadwood. Upon arriving, he settled in to pursue his hobby of drinking and playing poker. Rumors were circulating that he was being considered for the job of town marshal, though this is doubtful, since by the time of his arrival in Deadwood his eyesight was failing. Just a month after his arrival in Deadwood on August 2, 1876, Wild Bill, finding other chairs already taken, unwisely took a seat in a poker game with his back to the door. It was a fatal mistake. He was shot in the back of the head by Jack “Broken Nose” McCall, who would eventually hang for the murder.

Martha Jane Cannary–“Calamity Jane”–also came to be well known in Deadwood for her keen marksmanship, and her propensity for dressing in men’s clothes, her appetite for hard liquor, ability to tell outrageous lies and her extremely colorful “muleskinner’s” vocabulary. She had been, by turns, a teamster, nurse, cook, prostitute, prolific drinker and an Army scout. She was also greatly enamoured of Wild Bill. When she died in 1903 of pneumonia brought on by heavy drinking, she was buried at her request beside him, on a hill overlooking Deadwood in Mount Moriah Cemetery.

As for the lesser known citizens of the town, most of the miners were peaceable enough, but like most frontier mining camps, Deadwood attracted its share of shady characters, soiled doves and saloons–a volatile combination that was sure to trigger violence. The fledgling town averaged at least a murder a day in its first year. But the richest gold strike in the Black Hills had been found in Deadwood Gulch, so the town continued to grow at a furious pace, despite its unsavory reputation.

By 1877, Deadwood was quickly changing from a lawless mining camp to an organized community. Tents and shanties gave way to wooden buildings. The town elected a government, including a sheriff–Seth Bullock, the hardware merchant–to enforce the law and keep order. After a fire came close to destroying the downtown business district in 1879, an ordinance was passed decreeing that buildings had to be built of brick and stone. By 1889, the population of Dakota Territory–swelled by incoming settlers–was large enough for statehood, and the territory was admitted to the Union as the states of North and South Dakota.

By the early 1900s, Seth Bullock had been named Superintendant of the Black Hills Forest Preserve and was a personal friend of Teddy Roosevelt, having ridden with his Rough Riders in the Spanish American War. In 1905 Bullock was appointed U.S. Marshal for the state of South Dakota.

Iraqi insurgents intercepted drone feeds using widely available software

United States defense officials acknowledged that Iraqi insurgents successfully intercepted live video feeds from U.S. MQ-1 Predator unmanned aerial vehicles with widely available software. The story broke on Thursday in the Wall Street Journal with a defense official, anonymously, informing them it is an old problem, which has already been fixed.

The Journal says U.S. military personnel in Iraq discovered the problem late last year when they seized a Shi’ite militant’s laptop containing drone video feeds.

Senior defense and intelligence officials say insurgents were able to take advantage of an unprotected communications link in the systems of the remotely-piloted aircraft. The insurgents used software that is available online and costs about $26.

While U.S. defense officials say the issue has been fixed, the Journal quoted senior intelligence officials as saying it was not yet clear if the problem had been completely resolved.

It was developed to intercept music, photos, video, programs and other content that other users download from the Internet — no military data or other commercial data, only free legal content.

U.S. officials say there is no evidence that militants had been able to take control of the drones. But the intercepted video feeds could show where the planes are operating.

The Journal also reported that U.S. drone feeds have also been intercepted in Afghanistan.

Officials say the U.S. government has known about a flaw in the drone communication system since the NATO intervention in Bosnia in the 1990s. At the time, the military assumed local adversaries would not know how to exploit it.

The report says fighters in Iraq used software programs such as one called “SkyGrabber” from the Russian company SkySoftware, which is designed to intercept data transmitted by satellite Internet.

The Journal quoted one of the program’s developers, Andrew Solonikov, as saying it was designed to download legal content — such as music and video — and that it was never intended to intercept military data. Solonikov said in a email to the paper, “It was developed to intercept music, photos, video, programs and other content that other users download from the Internet — no military data or other commercial data, only free legal content.”

Space Shuttle Atlantis launch delayed until 2008

NASA have today announced that the launch of Space Shuttle Atlantis, mission STS-122, which is a module delivery mission to the International Space Station (ISS), will be delayed until January 2nd, 2008 at the earliest, after scrubbing today’s launch attempt, and an earlier attempt on December 6th.

The decision to scrub the launch attempt was made at 7:24 a.m. EST by shuttle program managers. The reason behind the scrubbing is to allow shuttle engineers to spend time diagnosing and fixing the erroneous readings presented to the crew and Mission Control by the intermittent malfunctioning of a critical engine cutoff sensor (ECO). While only one of the four sensors was malfunctioning, the current launch criteria for the mission state that all four ECOs must be functioning correctly in order to launch.

At a meeting held at 9 a.m., NASA’s Mission Management Team for STS-122 decided on a postponement until January 2nd at the very earliest. Atlantis is due to deliver the European Space Agency’s (ESA) Columbus laboratory module to the ISS. Alan Thirkettle, ESA’s Space Station Program Manager, said, regarding the delay in launch: “In the big picture, it’s not a setback. [But] it is disappointing because we have 750 people over here.”

So youve built your website, you know what keywords you want to target (i.e. what words your customers are searching for), and youre ready to write your copy. Youve been told that you should use your keywords frequently so that you appear in search results for those words. But what does frequently mean?

How many times should you use your primary keyword? This case study helps answer that question.

Some background on Keyword Density

In order to understand optimum keyword usage, we first need to have some way of measuring keyword frequency. In the Search Engine Optimization (SEO) world, frequency is actually referred to as density. Keyword density is a measure of the number of times your keyword appears on a page expressed as a percentage of the total wordcount of that page. For example, if your page has 100 words, and your keyword phrase appears 5 times, its density is 5%. So when you hear someone say keyword density, thats normally what theyre talking about. (TIP: You can automatically check the keyword density of your page at http://www.live-keyword-analysis.com.)

However, there is another, more complex measure of keyword density which takes into account the text components in the HTML of the page (i.e. the meta tags: Title, Keywords, Alt Text, Description, and Comments). When using this measure, you dont just count the words your visitor sees; you also count the words in your meta tags. For example, if you have 100 words on your home page, 10 words in your Title tag, 20 words in your Description tag, 70 words in your Alt tags, and 10 words in your Comments tag, your total wordcount for the page is 100 + 10 + 20 + 70 + 10 = 210. Similarly, when counting keywords, you dont just add up the number of times a visitor will see your keyword, you also count the number of times that keyword appears in your meta tags. For example, if your keyword appears 5 times in the home page copy, 3 times in the Title tag, 5 times in the Description tag, 30 times in your Alt tags, and twice in your Comments tag, your total keyword count is 5 + 3 + 5 + 30 + 2 = 45. So with a total wordcount of 210 and a keyword count of 45, your keyword density is 45/210 x 100 = 21%. It is argued that this measure of keyword density is more relevant as the search engines measure density in this fashion. As you can see, you need to be very aware of which measure youre talking about when youre talking keyword density. But let me reiterate; mostly when people talk about keyword density, theyre talking the simple measure.

And now down to business What keyword density (of either kind) should you be targeting on your website?

Theres a lot of debate surrounding this issue because the search engine companies dont disclose the details of their algorithms (as that would allow people to abuse the system). Instead, people working in the SEO world are left to figure it out based on their experience.

A recent article by respected SEO and Blog expert, Wayne Hurlbert, (see http://www.webpronews.com/news/ebusinessnews/wpn-45-20050501KeywordDensitySEOconsiderations.html) suggests that Google sees pages with a keyword density of greater than 2% as spam. It was this article which prompted me to analyze the keyword density of my copywriting website.

CASE STUDY

The Website: This case study analyzes the website for my advertising copywriting and SEO copywriting business, Divine Write http://www.divinewrite.com. For my primary keyword, my site is now on page 1 of Google.com (out of approximately 900,000 search results).

Number of pages on site: At the time of writing, my website contained a total of 53 pages.

Primary keyword phrase: copywriter

Average keyword density: Using the simple measure of keyword density discussed above, the average keyword density of my copywriting website is 1.9%. Using the complex measure its 4.9%.

Keyword density range: Using the simple measure, my density ranged from 0.4% to 7.6%. Using the complex measure it ranged from 1.6% to 17.5%

Some comments on the figures

The figures and corresponding ranking detailed in this case study may not be directly relevant to every site. Theres a lot I dont know about the algorithms and there are bound to be other factors at play which I dont know about.

With regard to Wayne Hurlberts article, it would seem that he is referring to keyword density as calculated using the simple method discussed above.

The range figures are noteworthy because they suggest that you dont need to be paranoid about having some pages with a very high density and some with a very low density.

Conclusion

Thousands rally in Columbus, Ohio, for undocumented immigrants’ rights

On March 26, thousands rallied outside the Columbus, Ohio statehouse, advocating rights for undocumented immigrants. This was one of a series of rallies following one in Los Angeles, which was reported to have drawn over 500,000 attendees.

The sponsoring coalition included the Immigrant Worker Project, the Farm Labor Organizing Committee (FLOC), UFCW Local 880, MIGUATE (of [Dover, Ohio]), and the Red [network] de Inmigrantes de Ohio. Organizers wanted to raise awareness of bill pending in the US Senate, HR 4437, which would make it a felony to be an illegal alien, or to assist aliens in entering or staying the country illegally. Organizers also called for “true” immigration reform plan that would provide a path to citizenship for all immigrant workers.
