The Australian Labor Party member Christopher Bowen asked the Treasurer for details on massage services in a question on notice, and received the answer on October 31.

637 ASIC staff made use of massages, compared with only 50 in the ABS, who however spent more on massages than ASIC. ABS staff paid $15 for 15 minutes and $10 for 10 minutes, while ASIC staff paid only $10.86 per massage.

Four dead, at least 15 injured after gunman opens fire at fitness center in Bridgeville, Pennsylvania

Wednesday, August 5, 2009

Four people have been shot and killed and at least 15 wounded when a gunman opened fire inside a LA Fitness center in Bridgeville, Pennsylvania. The gunman was among the dead.

Reports say the man walked into a dance room where an all-female Latin dance class was in session, turned off the lights and began to shoot people. CNN reports that the gunman was a “middle-aged white male.” One witness said he was carrying a duffel bag, which he put down before shooting into the crowd. After opening fire, he turned the gun on himself. At least 30 people are reported to have been in the room at the time of the shooting.

Allegheny County police Superintendent Charles Moffatt said, “I’ve never seen nothing quite like this. It was very chaotic. […] There’s a good belief that the shooter is deceased.”

Collier Township Police Chief Tom Devin stated that the police, “believe the shooter committed suicide at the scene but we’re not positive.” Police report that the shooter’s motive may have been a domestic dispute with one of the exercisers.

Mike Hentosz, a witness who was inside the gym, said, “I feel like it’s a dream. I don’t know what to think of it.” A woman participating in the class, Nicole, said that 10 minutes into the class, “a middle-aged white male walked into the class. He had a big gym bag. […] He looked out of place in a class full of women.” When he began firing, she reported, she ran out of the gym and escaped in passerby’s car.

Wikinews interviews India’s first female Paralympic medalist Deepa Malik

Wednesday, September 14, 2016

Wikinews on Sunday interviewed Deepa Malik, India’s first female Paralympic medalist, who won the silver medal in the Women’s Shot Put F53 event finals, at the 2016 Summer Paralympics being held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Malik lost the gold medal to Bahrain’s Fatema Nedham, who had the best throw 4.76 metres, setting a new regional record in paralympic women’s shot put.

Arriving in Rio, Malik had initial trouble due to the airline losing her luggage; it didn’t all arrive until three days later: clothes, opening ceremony outfit and equipment including competition belts.

In early August there was a possibly that Malik might lose her spot on the Indian team going to Rio, with fellow female para athlete Karam Jyoti challenging Malik’s selection and the Sport’s Authority of Indian’s selection process at the High Court of Delhi. The high court ruled against the plaintiff.

Both of these events occurred against the wider backdrop of the Paralympic Committee of India being suspended by the International Paralympic Committee. The Sports Authority of India took final authority over the Paralympic Committee of India for sending a team to Rio, with agreement from the International Paralympic Committee; this arrangement allowed India to compete under their own flag at the 2016 Summer Paralympics.

((Wikinews)) Congratulations on your result.

Deepa Malik: Thank you so much.

((WN)) Even though you are currently waiting in terms of the end result of the protest.

DM: Absolutely, but I’m happy with my performance, I’m happy that I could improve and I could prove myself, there were a lot of questions back home on my selection and on my hard work. My single-minded focus that I had put into this journey of being a Paralympian. Well, I am just so anxious about the results.

((WN)) So how much did the court case and KLM losing your luggage impact on your preparations and your result today?

DM: Yes, but I’m happy that my husband was my coach here, and, so, I had huge moral support in terms of keeping my mind and everything in peace. Most of the equipment was available in the gym, we had to alter the training a bit like the throw days couldn’t happen, so we instead exercised. No, I think that is what sports teaches you, you can’t live on excuses, I never lived on excuses.

((WN)) You work around things.

DM: Yes, that’s what we do, that’s what a sportsman is suppose to do, rise again, and then fall and rise, and run, and I did exactly that.

((WN)) What message should other Indian women take away from your participation and result in Rio?

DM: This is going to be the first female medal that India would have ever won in Paralympics and as it is I’m working aggressively towards transforming this entire concept of empowerment for the women, especially the women in disabilities in my country. So I’m really happy that this medal give my voice more value, more strength, and I’ll be able to impact even more, though on the ninth of September the Prime Minister’s jury has awarded me with the award of Women Transforming India, I’m so happy that within three days of getting that award, I have added another feather to it and proved that yes this journey of ability beyond disability. And not just disability, this is a universal message that if women put their minds to their dreams they can balance it; age, gender, disability, is all a state of mind. If you put your passion and hard work, you can get it, and in the Indian scenario were they say infrastructure is a challenge, women participation that are taboo, religiously and psychologically, disabilities taken as a curse, dependability[?] increases because of lack of infrastructure, well, time to get rid of the excuses. We have to start erasing the excuses and believe your own self and that’s the message I’m carrying with all the activities that I do whether it is car rallying, motorbiking or swimming across a river, every record or every unique activity that I’ve undertaken and just below paralysis has been aimed at changing the stereotypical image of a women and also a women in disability. ?

((WN)) Will you and your daughter both be trying to represent India at the 2020 Games in Tokyo?

DM: I’m very sure about myself, but my daughter, though, she’s a Paralympian, yes, which again was considered a huge taboo in my society that oh my god both the mother and the daughter both have a physical disability, what is going to happen to these two, but we did good and she is working as a youth council representative in the Commonwealth countries, for the Paralympics specially, and her work though her foundation called Wheeling Happiness has earned her the young leader award from the Queen of England, so I guess her focus is now shifting to more on community service and empowering others and not just herself. And she is leaving on first of October to Loughborough to do her PhD doctorate programme in disability sports psychology, I’m very sure Loughborough is going to give her a huge amount of sports [inaudible] but how much time she going to decide to devote to sports and studies is her decision entirely. That’s her dream, her journey.

((WN)) How helpful was the Sports Authority of India in preparing and supporting your Rio ambitions??

DM: I think 100 per cent, because the biggest challenge we have back home is a customised training, or the infrastructure for that matter, so we were given the ability and the funds to train the way we wanted to train, and the funds were huge which were given to us, out accommodation, food, diet, physical therapist, psychologist, trainer, gym, everything was paid for, and customised, you want it and they give it. So I guess this was easy financially this time, because every expenses was taken care of, my husband could also take a sabbatical from his job and join my journey, and having him twenty-four seven and coaching me because he himself is an athlete, and have the best diet and counselling. I think it’s worked wonders, so I give shout out and a huge applaud.

((WN)) How important was it for you to have a carer in Rio?

DM: Yes, again we really have to appreciate the sports authority of India and also Paralympic Committee of India, which is going to start to function post-Rio in India. They were very very quick, they were very very adamant in giving the wheelchair people escorts. And I need help twenty four seven, I’m just below paralysed so it was really huge, emotionally, mentally, psychically training-wise, every way I think the situation was perfect.

((WN)) Thank you for your time.

DM: Thank you.

bookmark_border1 48 Is A Scale Often Used For Model Aircraft And Model Railroads

Submitted by: Annie Blaire

1:48 scale is popular among enthusiasts both as diecast models, construction toys and plastic models. It is especially traditional with manufacturers of scale model airplanes and model railways (where it is known as O gauge). 1:48 is also the most popular scale among Lego hobbiests because it is almost the scale of the minifig (1.5 inches: 6 feet).

It is close in dimension to 1:43 scale and 1:50 scale which are very popular for diecast vehicles.

Many manufacturers produce die-cast models of cars, buses, trucks construction equipment and other vehicles in scales compatible with or similar to O scale model railways. These are available in 1:48 scale, 1:43 scale and 1:50 scale. Producers include Conrad, Corgi, NZG, TWH Collectibles and many others. These are popular with collectors and easy to find.

In the past, Tamiya has started to manufacture a stock of military trucks scale models in 1:48 in addition to their more common 1:35 scale stock. This has been seen as an attempt to step into a bigger market since the stiff competition in the more bigger scale. This is the popular scale for Admiralty Board style models and Shipyard builders models.

It is common with producers of model railroads.

The biggest makers of USA 0 scale model trains today are Lionel, Weaver Models, LLC, MTH Electric Trains, Atlas O, and LLC.

In the USA, manufacturers such as the Ives, American Flyer and Lionel used 0 scale for their budget stock, marketing either Gauge 1 or Wide gauge (also known as standard gauge) as their premium models.

The Great Depression wiped out demand for the expensive bigger model trains, and by 1932, 0 gauge was the standard, almost by default. Because of the emphasis on play value, the gauge of pre World War II 0 gauge model trains varied. After World War II, manufacturers started paying more attention to gauge, and post-war engines and rolling stock tend to be larger and more detailed than their earlier counterparts.

Since the early 90s, O scale manufacturers have begun placing more emphasis on details, and the scale has experienced a resurgence in fame, although it remains less hamous than N and HO gauge. However, newer companies including MTH Electric Trains, LLC, Lionel, Atlas O, and Weaver are making very exact 1:48 scale models of trains.

0 gauge beginnings up until the mid-1970s, the various producers trackside items would interoperate with one another, but the model train cars themselves used couplers of differing designs, often making it difficult or impossible to use different producers cars together. The post War consolidation did little to improve matters. Marx used three different standards depending on the product line. Lionel used two, so frequently the companies’ own entry-level stock were incompatible with their high-end items , let alone with the competition. Hobbyists who wanted differing standards to interoperate had to resort to replacing couplers.

Between 1946 and 1976, the primary U.S. manufacturers of O gauge trains were Marx and Lionel, with American Flyer switching to the more-realistic S gauge and the rest of the manufacturers out of business.

Naomi Campbell testifies against former Liberian president

Thursday, August 5, 2010

Supermodel Naomi Campbell testified for prosecutors on Thursday in a war crimes case against former Liberian president Charles Taylor.

Taylor allegedly gave an uncut blood diamond to Campbell in 1997 when they met for dinner in South Africa, according to Professor David Crane of Syracuse University.

Crane told Voice of America, “The testimony itself is important because the prosecution wants to show that Charles Taylor has the mindset or what we call the mens rea to use the blood diamonds that were mined by Sierra Leoneans chained to pits in the Kailahun and Kenema area. And, he was using them for various reasons: to buy guns, to use cash to deposit, and also to buy influence.”

Taylor denies he possessed any uncut diamonds.

Campbell said in her testimony, “When I was sleeping I had a knock on my door. I opened my door and two men were there and gave me a pouch and said, ‘A gift for you.'” She said the men gave her “very small, dirty looking stones.”

She continued, “At breakfast I told Miss [Mia] Farrow and Miss [Carole] White what had happened and one of the two said, well that’s obviously Charles Taylor, and I said, yes I guess it was.”

Campbell was not sure Taylor sent her the blood diamonds and she claimed she assumed it was the accused and continued stating it was unlikely anyone else gave her the gift.

The Special Court for Sierra Leone in The Hague, The Netherlands ruled that no one may sketch, take photographs, or make videos of Campbell, due to her high profile. Photographers were barred from taking photos of Campbell entering or leaving the courthouse, but her testimony was recorded as usual.

India: Jammu and Kashmir government orders private tuitions to shut down for 90 days

Wednesday, April 25, 2018

On Sunday, the government of Jammu and Kashmir, India, ordered private academic coaching institutions for students until and including class XII to shut down for the next three months calling those institutions “distractions” for the students; with an exception of coaching institutions preparing students for professional exams.

After meeting the heads of some educational institutions, the state’s education minister Syed Altaf Bukhari said: “We had a discussion with our principals today to how to make the education system better. We have come to a conclusion that the distractions which affect our education system […] one of those distractions are the coaching centres”. He added the government is to review the status of the tuition centres with respect to their decisions twice a month.

High schools and colleges have suspended classes since the beginning of the month. Boycotting the classes, students protested against two encounters in Shopian that resulted in the killing of four civilians as well as twelve militants. Then there were protests against the gang rape and murder of eight-year-old girl Asifa Bano in Kathua who police said was held captive and sedated at a temple in January. Retired government official Sanji Ram and several others —including multiple police officers— were arrested earlier this month for, or in relation to, the gang rape and murder of Asifa. Asifa’s corpse was found in the village of Rasana on January 10.

Some of the protesters clashed with the state security forces, and pellets were fired over the protesters. Bukhari said, “Security of the students is paramount, that is why we kept schools and colleges closed. But now the students should control their emotions and go back to their classes […] Now, enough is enough, they have their protest and should attend school now.” Bukhari went on to add that they cannot “afford to have future a generation of illiterates and uneducated.” He said the students who come to the road for protests “would be treated as rowdies”.

According to an official in Jammu and Kashmir’s education department, the motivation behind the temporary shut down of tuitions was “when the coaching centres are closed, students would not have an option but to attend schools”. Coaching Centre Association president Junaid Yousuf responded to this ban, saying: “What is the point of ordering closure of coaching centres and keeping schools open? This defies logic. You are not shutting down the places where protests occur and closed those centres where there are no protests”.

“This distraction leads to fall in attendances in schools. We are not against coaching centres; we will first see how schools function. Therefore immediately we will request and order the coaching centres to stop their shops for some time[…] We are the custodians of the students and want that they are not distracted”, the Education Minister said.

Oral Roberts returns to namesake university amid son’s scandal

Monday, October 22, 2007

Former faith healer and televangelist Oral Roberts returned to Oral Roberts University (ORU) on October 22 as President. His son Richard Roberts, who served as president since 1993, stepped down last week amid allegations of illegal political and financial wrongdoing.

Oral said that all allegations made in the ORU lawsuit and an attached report are false and “said the university will begin mediation this week with the three former professors.” However according to Tulsa World, an attorney for the professors who sued ORU said, “Right now, we’re a bit disturbed about attempting any type of a settlement as long as they’re so adamant they haven’t done anything wrong,” and “We would prefer to move forward and develop the information and develop the case.”

On Monday night alumni, clergy from around the U.S., and the people fired held a rally at Morningstar Baptist Church asking for Richard to permantly resign. They say Robert’s temporary leave of absence “isn’t enough.”

Questions to Ask a Car Dealership When Purchasing Used Cars

by

Priestley White

Buying used cars in Ontario? Be prepared to have your list of questions ready for Hamilton car dealerships. There is a list of things you need to know about a vehicle before your name appears on the title. Making sure all these ducks are in a row can mean the difference between a lemon that sucks you dry and a dependable vehicle you can rely on to give years of productive, maintenance friendly satisfaction.

Who Owned the Vehicle Before Purchase? Especially for used cars in Ontario that have been traded into Hamilton car dealerships, always ask to view the maintenance records. They can always black in the owner’s name and address for confidentiality. For vehicles purchased at an auction, you may want to have a professional mechanic you trust give a thorough inspection of the vehicle. You don’t want to find any surprises under the hood, especially broken down on the side of the road. How Long Can I Test Drive It? The used car market these days is cold enough that Hamilton car dealerships are often lenient about how long you can test drive a car. Ask if you can test drive the vehicle for 24 hours, providing you can show proof of insurance and you promise to bring the gas tank back full. This way you can really get a comprehensive feel for how the car performs. Its a better way to get acquainted with any used cars in Ontario you might consider purchasing. What is the dealerships return policy? Don’t find out the answer to this one the hard way. Hamilton car dealerships have a wide variety of policies when it comes to returning vehicles, and it’s important to establish what those are before you hand over any cash. While no dealership will offer cash back, you can at least find a customer friendly dealer that will let you rethink the purchase and at least give equal or lesser value. Car buying is a serious commitment, and no sale should be completely set in stone without alternative options. What is Your Cash Price for the Vehicle? There is the financing price, and there is the cash price. Cold and hard, cash definitely rules over financing options. While Hamilton car dealerships will usually try to make money off the financing, they’ll generally give you a better price if you opt to pay in cash. Paying cash for used cars in Ontario can save you hundreds of dollars, not to mention a monthly car payment. If they don’t take cash, ask if they’ll take a trade in. You can usually get a couple thousand dollars off used cars in Ontario for a trade in, even if you to have the older vehicle towed to the Hamilton car dealerships.

Wikinews interviews Spanish shooter Paulo Fontán

Wednesday, November 6, 2013

This week, Wikinews interviewed Spanish Paralympic sport shooter Paulo Fontán Torreiro. Late last month, Galician Fontán competed at the Alicante hosted 2013 IPC European Shooting Championship, where he finished twenty-third in the R4 10-meter air rifle standing event, and fortieth in the R5 10-meter air rifle prone event.

((Wikinews)) : So you competed at the IPC European Shooting Championships last month? How did you do? Are you happy with the result?

Paulo Fontán Torreiro: Yes, I competed in the European Championship in Alicante. It was my first important event and I felt very nervous, I wanted to perform well. Despite improving my previous scores and achieving the minimum qualifying score for next year’s World Championship, I think I could have done better.

((WN)) : What do you think you need to improve to possibly compete at the 2016 Rio Paralympics and get a medal?

Paulo Fontán: Basically I would need to be able to train more constantly, obtain financial resources to participate in international events, and have a bit of luck on the day of the competition.

((WN)) : What are the biggest challenges you face on the road to the Rio Games? Money? Good competition? The support network to travel and compete at the highest level? Disability access at training venues?

Paulo Fontán: All that are included in the questions. In order to train effectively, you need adequate facilities, and that’s not the norm here. And to increase my level, I would need to compete against good rivals, basically at international events. For that, I require money and support, something that’s not too available.

((WN)) : Why did you chose to compete in shooting? Why not compete in another sport?

Paulo Fontán: I first tried other sports but finally focused on shooting because it fits my capabilities better, I’m not bad at it, and there is a very agreeable atmosphere at the competitions.

((WN)) : Who are your role models in shooting? Are there any shooters you particularly admire?

Paulo Fontán: I must thank the support Juan Saavedra has given me since I started, and which he keeps giving me when I need it. I would like to mention Marciano Vázquez, the Spanish national team coach, too for his advice and trust in me when he called me up for the European Championship: I hope to return his trust with some future triumph.

((WN)) : What is the sport shooting culture like in Spain? Are people generally supportive when you tell them what sport you compete in?

Paulo Fontán: I don’t think it’s very well known, and there could be some rejection because of the “pegar tiros” part, but that’s out of ignorance since it is mainly a mental sport, a sport requiring focus.

((WN)) : Do you think the classification system in shooting is fair? Do you think it should be changed?

Paulo Fontán: I’ve only been doing this for three years and haven’t had time to analyze it deeply so as to have an opinion about it.

((WN)) : Would you recommend the sport to other people with disabilities? What are reasons they should or should not take up the sport?

Paulo Fontán: Yes, I would recommend it, and I would because it is a sport which can be practiced by a wide array of different disabilities, and for a long time. The biggest problem is the high initial investment, the lack of adequate facilities or the cost of travelling to competitions since there are not many places that allow people with disabilities to participate.
