Ian Thorpe starts to recover from chest pains

Friday, March 3, 2006

Australian swimmer Ian Thorpe is reported to be feeling much better after suffering from chest pain for some time.

The Olympic gold medalist was due to swim in the 100m and 200m freestyle and in three relays at the Commonwealth Games, but due to his complaints his fitness has been in doubt. He has been unable to take the drugs needed to overcome his pain as they are banned from the Games.

Thorpe told the media Thursday “It’s actually the best I’ve felt in a while; the antibiotics are starting to work.”

bookmark_borderUniversal Precautions 4 Areas Within A Health Care Facility

Submitted by: Greg Garner

You must be already aware how the blood can carry various dangerous diseases which can potentially pass on to another person when coming in contact with the skin. In addition there are several other bodily fluids too that can carry such infection. But it is not always possible to know if the patient has an infection or if the fluids are mixed with blood, thus taking certain precautions at all times becomes a must. Universal precautions require all health care staff to wear a host of protective gear to avoid getting infected.

Following are 4 areas within a health care facility where universal precautions must be applied.

Laboratory Safety: A medical laboratory contains an array of equipments and dangerous chemicals, add to this hundreds of blood and tissue samples, many of which may be infected. Considering the possible risks in such a set up the laboratory staff must wear gloves, coats and goggles at all times. Face shields or other gear must be worn depending on the level of hazard. Use of appropriate footwear and foot covers may also be recommended to avoid injury from broken glass which may be contaminated by the fluids. Using such personal equipment not only prevents any contact with the skin but is also useful against chemical spills and fumes.

Handling Linen: Linen in a hospital can be a hotbed for infection and must be handled with due care. The concerned staff must always wear gloves and face masks for safety. The used linen must be immediately put in specially designated bags and any linen that has traces of fluid must be carefully rolled in a way that the stains are on the inside. Also ensure minimal movement or shaking of such linen to avoid the spread of dangerous organisms. Furthermore make sure that you change your gloves between handling soiled and clean linen to prevent contamination of the latter.

Housekeeping: Housekeeping acquires a different meaning in a health care facility where the cleaning is not limited to removing dust and debris like in a home or office, but also for decontaminating various surfaces that can have disease-causing micro-organisms. When cleaning the floors and furniture surfaces with suitable detergents and disinfectants, the housekeeping staff must put on suitable gear like gloves, masks and aprons. Additional care must be taken in high risk areas and cleaning must be done in a sedate manner without any agitating actions as it can increase the possibility of spreading infection.

Managing Fluids: The entire basis of universal precautions revolves around safety from body fluids and utmost caution is required in event of any spills. First make sure that you have a pair of gloves on that are not damaged in any way. Then use a sufficient number of paper towels to soak up the fluids followed by applying the appropriate disinfectant. The towels and gloves must be immediately discarded in properly marked bags. Also remember to wash your hands thoroughly.

Remember that following universal precautions even when not in direct contact with a patient is equally important when working in any part of a health care facility.

Demonstrations planned to protest internet censorship in Finland

Tuesday, March 4, 2008

On March 4, 2008 a demonstration against censorship is planned to be held at the Finnish Parliament, part of the continuing controversy over the Finnish Internet child porn filter. The organizers of the demonstration expect at least two-hundred participants, with representatives of the digital rights organization Electronic Frontier Finland (Effi) and several political parties will also present.

The controversy arose after the Finnish National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) blacklisted censorship critic Matti Nikki’s site. Matti Nikki himself is now under criminal investigation for aiding in the distribution of child pornography, as he published a large portion of the filtering blacklist on his still-censored website. MP Jyrki Kasvi has made an official inquiry in the Finnish Parliament on the matter, and Effi has filed an official complaint to the parliamentary ombudsman.

The Finnish Minister of Communication, Suvi Lindén, and the NBI have been severely criticized over the filtering system, which has been under heavy scrutiny by the media. After stating that she will not tolerate discussion criticizing the filtering system, as the situation is not a matter of freedom of speech, a petition was signed by over 12,000 people demanding her resignation. This was accompanied by a Thai civil rights group questioning the blocking as child porn of a memorial site dedicated to a member of the Thai royal family. Eventually the NBI removed the memorial site from the blacklist, explaining that the DNS based system blocks only whole sites, and that there was child pornography site under the same domain; this raised questions about the efficiency of the filtering system.

Lindén later admitted that she did not know the details of the filtering system, as it had been established by her predecessors, before the change of government in early 2007. She has nevertheless defended the system, citing the protection of children, but admitted that there are problems with the Finnish system, and in other countries with similar systems.

The NBI have published a statement explaining their actions, at the request of Lindén. In it the NBI stated that there are filtered sites that do not contain any child pornography, but claimed that it was not their fault, rather a side effect of the system. They also noted that they are planning to address this issue by switching from a DNS based filter to a URL based system.

According to a prominent Finnish expert of filtering technology, the planned URL filtering would cost least two million euros. This estimate comes at the same time that the government cut back funds for work against child abuse, causing further uproar.

The NBI’s official position is that they block pornographic sites where the actors look too young, and sites which link to these sites. The argument for the filtering is that there is a large amount of child pornography on the Internet, most of it based on servers in countries where the authorities are indifferent to the issue.

The general opinion after analysis by multiple people is that the list of at least 1,700 sites contains a handful of actual child pornographic sites, most of which are not located in Western countries. However, some sites in the list are located in countries like the United States, the Netherlands, United Kingdom and Germany, and very few of those contain even questionable or borderline material. Dutch journalist Karin Spaink reviewed 40 sites on the list which were physically located in the Netherlands. She concluded that some of the sites have illegal child pornography, and that four of those are also blocked in the Netherlands by their equivalent filtering system. She estimated that about half of the 40 did not contain any illegal material.

Effi’s response to the NBI’s statement was that the issue with censorship is not technical but that it has no place in an open, democratic society.

City of Edinburgh Council seek to improve local music scene

Tuesday, November 18, 2014

  • 1
  • 2

Yesterday evening saw the Usher Hall in Edinburgh host a meeting between representatives of the City of Edinburgh Council (CEC) and the local rock and pop music scene. The meeting was dominated with local musicians’ complaints over the “zero tolerance” policy Edinburgh is viewed as having adopted towards amplified music. The meeting began with the leading panel — Norma Austin Hart, vice-convener for Culture and Sport; John Stout, promoter from Regular Music; Kevin Buckle, of local store Avalanche Records; and Karl Chapman, manager of the Usher Hall — introducing themselves and outlining the purpose of the meeting. This being best-summarised as a desire to emulate the vibrant music scene of places as far-flung as Austin, Texas and Sydney, Australia.

Councillor Hart indicated officials from Austin had already offered to get involved in improving the live music scene in the city; although none were present from Austin, US-born local musician Pat Dennis provided his frank opinion on where Edinburgh fails to nurture the local music scene: that failure to support a grass-roots, small venue, music scene prevents the city being capable of organising events similar to Austin’s South by Southwest festival outwith August, when Edinburgh hosts the Festival and Fringe.

HAVE YOUR SAY
How do you think live music should be balanced against resident noise complaints?
Add or view comments

Coming in for the lion’s share of criticism, staff from CEC’s Licensing Board were visibly uncomfortable when the topic of the “single complainant” was brought up time and time again. Unlike any other business within the city, or residential properties, noise pollution within premises permitted to sell alcohol is not managed by environmental health staff. That responsibility is bundled with the alcohol license, which leaves publicans fearful that their premises will be forced to close if they do not comply with demands to cease use of any amplification, or hosting live music. This was characterised as a ‘tyranny of the minority’, a most-undemocratic approach where one person — for example, recently moved into a property adjacent to a long-established premises hosting live music — could force the closure of a business which has hosted local talent for 30+ years.

Taking heed of the strength of feeling from the majority present, Councillor Hart made a number of personal commitments towards the end of the meeting. Those included setting up a working group, Music is Audible, to look at how the council could better work with venues, and to have a follow-up meeting in March next year.

Internet regulation bill approved by Russian Parliament

Friday, May 2, 2014

The Russian Parliament passed a new bill on Tuesday to restrict and regulate blogging and social media content, expected to be enforced in August. The bill comes following Russian actions in Ukraine and a Russian crackdown on domestic criticism.

Under the bill, bloggers with 3000 or more daily views will face a similar level of legal liability as media organisations. These bloggers will be required to register their identities with Russia’s consumer rights protection agency, Rospotrebnadzor; they may not spread extremist material or violate citizen privacy, and must undertake fact-checking to verify published content. Non-compliance risks content blocking and individual fines of 10,000–30,000 rubles (US$270–US$833), business fines of 50,000–300,000 rubles (US$1400–US$8300).

Social networking sites, blog hosts, and other “distributors of information on the internet” will also be required register with Rospotrebnadzor, and will be expected to store the data of popular users, and provide up to six months of user activity logs on request for possible use in government investigations. Non-compliance will net fines for private citizens of 3,000–5,000 rubles (US$83–US$140), officials 30,000–50,000 rubles (US$833–US$1,388), and businesses 300,000–500,000 rubles (US$8,330–US$13,888).

The bill has drawn criticism from human rights activists and the Russian technology sector, with some search engines and blogging platforms taking steps to protect users and circumvent the new regulations.

Mother, daughter accused of stealing of husband’s $3.5 million lottery ticket

Saturday, October 4, 2008

On April 4, 2008 Bobbi-Jo Arnold, accompanied by her mother Mary Patricia Moore and other family members, claimed a $3.5 million lottery ticket win in Toronto. On October 2 the two women were arrested by Ontario Police. Both are facing charges including fraud over $5000, possession of property obtained by crime, false pretenses and uttering a forged document. They allegedly stole the ticket from Moore’s then-husband.

HAVE YOUR SAY
The question is really he said/she said in a divorce case. If he is trying to claim the daughter’s ticket, is he as evil as his wife would be if she stole the ticket from her husband?
Add or view comments

The family dispute has led to Ms Moore (59) filing for divorce from her husband of ten years, Gerald Moore (81), in August. Mr Moore alleges Ms Arnold received the ticket from her mother, who took it from his bedside table. He further alleges his wife “manipulated” his medications to leave him incapable to grasp what was occurring. The Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation is also named in Mr Moore’s civil suit for alleged negligence in investigating Ms Arnold’s claim.

The bail judge’s order requires Ms Moore to live with her daughter Arnold in a home she purchased with the lottery winnings, and not with her husband. As well, both women are ordered not to leave Essex County, Ontario and to surrender their passports to the police.
