Abducted Richmond Hill, Ontario man walks into police station

Friday, November 3, 2006

A Richmond Hill, Ontario man is currently released after he was abducted and escaped last night.

Chee Kian Jeff Chan, 28, was forced by three people into a black Mercedes SUV (which was caught on security camera) in the parking garage of his condominium at 23 Oneida Cresant in the Yonge Street and High Tech Road area. A small amount of blood was found at the scene. He was dropped off at an unnamed location in Toronto Wednesday night.

The suspects were wearing black clothes and balaclavas covering their faces at the time of the incident. The licence plate number of the Mercedes SUV is not known because there was no plate on the front of the vehicle.

Chan walked into the Major Mackenzie Dr. W. police station, at about 6:45 p.m. last night, suffering from injuries and went to a hospital for examination.

York Regional Police say that he is a poker player, after hearing about a man with the same name that took seventh place at the River Rock Casino Resort near Vancouver, British Columbia on November 19, 2005, earning him $44,753.

No ransom note was received and police believe that it was an extortion attempt.

“He was unaware of a lot of things during his ordeal,” Constable Laurie Perks said. “He didn’t know what they looked like. His vision was concealed and so he therefore didn’t know where he was through most of his ordeal.”

It is believed that Chan’s three captors released him after 28 hours because of the media coverage surrounding his disappearance.

The investigation is still ongoing.

bookmark_borderHow Can A Home Loan Bring The Most Value To My Home?

By Joseph Kenny

It is true that you can use the equity in your home as a way to get a secured loan for home improvement. In fact, it is being used now as a common way for people to get money to make their home improvements and fill some of their dreams. In order to get the best value out of your equity, not every home project will work. Here is how you can get the home equity you need and make those improvements that make a valuable addition to your home.

If you have lived in your home for a few years, then you most likely have some equity in it. Two of the most common ways to get to that money, is by either refinancing your first mortgage and getting a cash out mortgage, or by getting a second mortgage with a home equity loan or a home equity line of credit.

Your circumstances will determine what is the best for you. The interest rate, though, on a first mortgage is usually lower than a second mortgage, and if you have an adjustable rate mortgage now, you may be looking to refinance and getting into a stable fixed rate mortgage. On the other hand, you may only want to get enough money for your project, and can afford an additional payment from a second mortgage. You will certainly then want to consider a home equity line of credit in which you can draw out only as much as you need, and will only pay interest on that amount.

The best thing about a home loan that increases the value of your home is that the money used for that purpose is also tax deductible. This means that you are actually paying less for it than the interest rate you are given. Plus, your home is gaining in value – if you do the right projects.

Although, you certainly can do anything you want with the cash out of your home’s equity, putting at least some of it back into your home is your best possible move. Currently, there also are some specific things that will give your home the best return in increased value. It is possible that they may not be what you think. These things include hi-tech renovations to your kitchen or bathroom, adding siding to your home, or adding an addition – such as a bedroom.

Before you go and sign up for the first home loan that you can find, you should do some homework first. There are some scams out there, and it will take some knowledge on your part to avoid them. Use mortgage calculators to determine the actual cost over the long term, and get several comparison quotes. Watch out for any early payoff penalties.

Another thing that you want to avoid is private mortgage insurance. This can be avoided by not borrowing more than 80% of your home’s value – if you are refinancing a first mortgage.

Finally, you should check – before you get a secured home loan, if the value of homes in your area is going up or down. This will let you know whether or not you can expect to recover some of your investment when you sell the house. You can find this out by talking to a Realtor in you neighborhood. If homes are losing their value around you, you may want to reconsider.

SAHTECH, SEMI, and Semiconductor Industry to promote “SEMI Safety Guideline” in Taiwan

Wednesday, April 2, 2008

“Localization of ‘SEMI Safety Guideline'”, executed by Safety and Health Technology Center of Taiwan (SAHTECH) and supervised by Semiconductor Equipment and Materials International (SEMI), was announced today in Hsinchu, Taiwan.

This localization included several fields on health and safety of semiconductor manufacturing, certification testing on electrical devices, evaluations on fire or natural diseases, and environmental issues on semiconductor manufacturing devices, etc.. Companies and manufacturers from the semiconductor industry also paid more attentions on this guideline because issues on carbon-savings, earthquakes, fire diseases, and environment-efficiencies were included into this guideline.

This [safety] guideline was originally promoted by SEMI since 1975 and was set up according to industry infrastructures in Europe, America, Korea, Japan, and Taiwan. Currently, its standards from the S1 to S25 was completely ruled by several world-class executives in semiconductor industry, and the S26 standard for FPD industry, proposed in Taiwan, was also in several arrangements with the other countries.
The semiconductor industry is a high-value industry in every country. If a fabrication plant (fab) was vandalized with fire or earthquake, how will a company decrease its lossless after a disease? As of some examples from the other countries, several companies didn’t pay more attentions on devices’ safety and finally got a damn trouble on counting lossless after a disease. By the way, voltages on electric using will take effect on energy especially the wasting of CO2. We [the semiconductor industry in Taiwan] hope this announcement will drive on global safety standards.
Generally, the designs of a fab will take effect on possibilities when a disease take place in, and its scale will chain much wasting on manufacturing devices and materials. For example, when using fluorine in a fab, a company would consider using a gas tank car rather than a steel bottle. But due to environment and carbon-saving issues, some evaluations should be tested in a fab.

On the other side of the incoming trade show of 2008 SecuTech Expo, scheduled after 2 weeks at Taipei World Trade Center, not only main fields on security devices, information security, and fire & disease preventions, the digital monitoring will be a hot topic in security industry. For applications on fire & disease preventions, because its issues contained industrial applications and ESH (Environmental, Safety & Health) managements, if a company want to decrease the ratio of fire disease or earthquake, companies from safety and related industries should pay more attentions on disease preventions.

2020 Melbourne Lord Mayor candidate Wayne Tseng answered some questions about his campaign for the upcoming election from Wikinews. The Lord Mayor election in the Australian city is scheduled to take place this week.

Tseng runs a firm called eTranslate, which helps software developers to make the software available to the users. In the candidate’s questionnaire, Tseng said eTranslate had led to him working with all three tiers of the government. He previously belonged to the Australian Liberal Party, but has left since then, to run for mayorship as an independent candidate.

Tseng is of Chinese descent, having moved to Australia with his parents from Vietnam. Graduated in Brisbane, Tseng received his PhD in Melbourne and has been living in the city, he told Wikinews. Tseng also formed Chinese Precinct Chamber of Commerce, an organisation responsible for many “community bond building initiatives”, the Lord Mayor candidate told Wikinews.

Tseng discussed his plans for leading Melbourne, recovering from COVID-19, and “Democracy 2.0” to ensure concerns of minorities in the city were also heard. Tseng also focused on the importance of the multi-culture aspect and talked about making Melbourne the capital of the aboriginals. Tseng’s deputy Lord Mayor candidate Gricol Yang is a Commercial Banker and works for ANZ Banking Group.

Currently, Sally Capp is the Lord Mayor of Melbourne, the Victorian capital. US toy retail giant Toys R Us files for bankruptcy in US, Canada

Thursday, September 21, 2017

On Monday night, New Jersey, US-based toy retail giant Toys R Us filed for bankruptcy in the US as well as in Canada. The retailer filed it from Richmond, Virginia for Chapter 11 bankruptcy code in the US, and a judge allowed a loan of over US$2 billion.

According to the filing, the retail chain owns US$6.6 billion in assets, but has a debt of US$7.9 billion. They were under a roughly US$5 billion debt since the company underwent a three-way acquisition in 2005. Kohlberg Kravis Roberts, Bain Capital, and Vornado Realty Trust acquired Toys R Us for around US$7 to US$7.5 billion. After the US judge approved a loan, Toys R Us received about US$3 billion from the lenders to continue the business and survive a competitive market, and restructure their business model. E-commerce giant Amazon.com, Walmart and Target are some of the competitors for the conventional ‘brick and mortar’ toy shop, with lower priced-merchandise and fast, cheap delivery. In a conference call in June, CEO Dave Brandon said “very, very aggressive pricing online” was causing problems. He also said the company was experiencing “significant weakness in demand for their products globally”. Toys R Us are to clear a debt of US$400 million by May 2018.

Toys R Us said they would continue to operate for the holiday season. Bankruptcy lawyer Jeff Gleit said Toys R Us “need to do both a financial restructuring as well as an operational restructuring” and “needs to modernize with the times”. Last holiday season, Toys R Us made sales around US$4.5 billion. Overall, the company reported a US$29 million loss in 2016. CEO Brandon said, “Our objective is to work with our debt holders and other creditors to restructure the US$5 billion of long-term debt on our balance sheet, which will provide us with greater financial flexibility to invest in our business”.

Toys R Us employs more than 60 thousand people in 38 countries around the world in more than 1600 stores. The company’s stocks fell by six percent after filing for Chapter 11 protection. US bankruptcy code Chapter 11 allows the company to restructure under a plan approved by the court. The company would also be shielded from creditors’ claims during the process. For the stores located in Canada, Toys R Us filed bankruptcy in Ontario and are to undergo reorganisation. However, 259 stores located outside the US or Canada will not undergo reorganisation, the company said.

Over 300 US-based retailers have filed for bankruptcy this year, and hundreds of stores closed.

New Zealand delays emissions trading scheme

Monday, November 17, 2008

New Zealand’s incoming government will delay the implementation of the country’s emissions trading scheme (ETS) pending a full inquiry into climate change.

The decision was revealed in the National Party‘s confidence and supply agreement with the ACT Party. The agreement commits National to a review of climate change policy by a special select committee of Parliament.

The review will include the emissions trading scheme and possible alternatives to it, as well as “hear[ing] competing views on the scientific aspects of climate change” and considering whether responding to climate change is economically worthwhile. Implementation of the ETS would be delayed until the review is complete — a process expected to take at least a year.

The ETS requires companies emitting greenhouse gases to cover their emissions with permits. The legislation was passed on September 10, 2008, and provides for a phased implementation, with forestry entering the scheme immediately, industrial and energy sector emissions entering in 2010, and transport fuels in 2011.

The National Party won a victory over the Labour Party in last week’s elections, and has formed a new government cabinet, led by prime minister-elect John Key.

Help People as an Occupational Therapist Assistant/ Physiotherapy Assistant

by

Izabela

If you are passionate about encouraging people and have the patience to understand that sometimes progress might be slow, you may be well suited for a career as an occupational therapist assistant/physiotherapist assistant. In this role, you will be vital in helping developmentally and physically challenged people to gain the skills they need to attain independence and a better quality of life.

Occupational therapy assistants and physiotherapy assistants work under registered occupational therapists and physiotherapists to support a variety of people. Whether the person has lost his or her ability to function because of an injury, the aging process, or a developmental or emotional disability, it is vital to help him or her attain a normalcy in life. Therefore, aside from being encouraging, occupational therapist assistants (OTAs) and physiotherapist assistants (PTAs) must possess some specific traits. First, they must be able to respect and care about the uniqueness of individuals. People in this profession may work with the elderly, who may not be as motivated to go on or perhaps with people who don’t speak the language or maybe even children who have had a traumatizing experience and are acting out. The assistant must respect these people and not lose his or her cool when treatment becomes difficult. This goes hand-in-hand with having the ability to communicate. Physiotherapist assistants and occupational therapist assistants must know how to effectively deal with a variety of people. Also, critical thinking and decision-making are required. You must make quick, informed decisions after critically assessing the situation and patient. Lastly, due to the nature of the profession, OTAs and PTAs must be able to tolerate regular physical activity. Attending a diploma program, such as Centennial College’s Occupational Therapist Assistant/ Physiotherapy Assistant program at Occupational Therapy University, helps you to attain such skills. The program prepares you for work in a wide range of settings such as: hospitals, nursing homes, seniors’ residences, schools, rehabilitation centres, and the private industry. This is done through training such as learning to document and complete client records, develop and implement strategies that will benefit clients and formulate exercise plans. Students also obtain a relevant knowledge of health sciences, psychosociological sciences and health conditions. Aside from in-classroom learning, students participate in a fieldwork experience that provides the opportunity for application of skills in a clinical setting with a range of clients. Centennial College expects students applying for admission to present at minimum an Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) or equivalent or be 19 years of age or older. Possession of minimum admission requirements does not guarantee admission. In addition, students must also possess: Compulsory English 12C, or U or skills assessment, or equivalent and Biology 11C or U or equivalent. There are also important fieldwork placement requirements, such as: CPR Level HCP (Health Care Provider) and standard first aid certification, a clear vulnerable police check prior to semester 2, immunization review form and completion of a mask fit test. Upon graduation, students are ready to work as a physiotherapist assistant or an occupational therapist assistant. Both jobs include shared tasks such as: conducting initial interviews with patients, carrying out observations, updating client records, supporting clients in reaching their goals, assisting with physical activity and exercises, and keeping work areas tidy. But what is the difference between the two professions? Occupational therapist assistants deal with treatment that helps individuals improve their ability to perform daily activities, such as dressing or feeding themselves. Physiotherapist assistants focus on the large motor functions such as strength, balance and range of motion. Of course, both jobs have the same rewarding outcome of helping people to gain independence.

Here, Izabela concerns herself with how injury, illness, the process of aging, developmental disability or emotional disability can be dealt with by occupational/physical therapy. She documents how

occupational therapist assistants

/ physiotherapy assistants help people. She also notes the type of training required.

Three injured in a school shooting in Idaho, US; sixth grader in custody

Sunday, May 9, 2021

Two students and a school employee have been injured following a shooting at Rigby Middle School in Idaho, United States, on Thursday, with a sixth grader in custody.

According to Jefferson County sheriff Steve Anderson, the sixth grader — who attends the middle school and lives in Idaho Falls — pulled out a handgun from her backpack, firing the gun both in and outside the school, with a teacher managing to disarm the student. Police were called to the school at about 9:15AM local time, and the suspect was taken in the custody of the local sheriff’s office.

The trauma medical director at Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center, Dr. Michael Lemon, has stated the three injured people had non-life threatening injuries to the extremities. The school employee has been treated and released from medical care. A warrant has been issued against an Idaho Falls residence in relation to the shooting.

School was cancelled in the district for Friday. The local school superintendent, Chad Martin, told “this is the worst nightmare a school district could ever face”, and “our hearts and our prayers go out to the victims and their families and all those involved”. A student at the school — 12-year-old Yandel Rodriguez — told the Associated Press “me and my classmate were just in class with our teacher — we were doing work — and then all of a sudden, here was a loud noise and then there were two more loud noises. Then there was screaming”.
