Israeli PM Ariel Sharon briefly opens eyes

Monday, January 16, 2006

Israeli media is reporting that Prime Minister Ariel Sharon opened his eyes for the first time since he suffered a major stroke on January 4, 2006.

However, hospital officials said the reports were generated by the Sharon family’s “impression of eyelid movement, whose medical significance is unclear.”

“He was listening to a tape of his grandson and you could see tears in his eyes for a matter of seconds before he closed them again,” a doctor treating Sharon told AFP news agency on condition of anonymity.

Army Radio, citing unidentified close associates of Sharon, say the Prime Minister could “recognize people around him.”

However, hospital officials state that it is “too early to tell whether the development represented a significant improvement or was just a temporary reflex.”

Sharon had undergone a tracheotomy on Sunday to help with his breathing and to help prevent infection from his respirator tube.

South Korean president expresses willingness to supply COVID-19 vaccines to North Korea

Thursday, June 17, 2021

On Monday, during a state visit by the South Korean president to Austria, president Moon Jae-in said in a joint press conference with Austrian president Alexander Van der Bellen, “If North Korea agrees, [we] will push proactively for cooperation on [COVID-19] vaccine supplies for it”.

Austrian President Van der Bellen agreed with Moon, speaking about united efforts of all countries to end the pandemic. He further said, “In case of any signal from North Korea [for requesting help], we will of course help.”

The status of COVID-19 in North Korea is unknown, as the regime still claims to have no case of the virus, a claim many foreign observers qualify as untrue. In an article by Daily NK, North Korean military authorities are reportedly “scrambling” to secure any doses of any vaccine to inoculate their military in a “military-first” effort, with multiple sources claiming up to 25% of the military has been placed in quarantine.

In the same article, Chinese medical supplies have reportedly been banned from use in Pyongyang hospitals after the death of an official who had received an injection of Chinese-made medicine. The exclusion of Chinese medicine may have also been applied to Chinese-made vaccines, such as the ones made by Sinovac and Sinopharm, furthered the article.

The visit was the first of its kind, as president Moon is the first South Korean president to make a state visit to Austria since the countries first opened diplomatic relations in 1892. Relations between the two countries will mark their 130th anniversary next year.

bookmark_borderWhy Purchase Digital Audio Switchers?

byAlma Abell

Homes are full of technological wonders these days. Some may span across the decades but many people are always updating or revamping their electronics. If you have a sound system of any type, you may become frustrated for several reasons. While many items of your home entertainment system feature several audio connections, this is not always true of the amplifiers that provide the sound. It is also is true of surround sound processors. They may have only one input. Instead of constantly manually removing and replacing cords and cables from one item to another, you can consider purchasing switchers. Depending upon your home theatre system, digital audio switchers may be the best way to go.

Variations on a Theme

When it comes to switchers, you generally find several different types available on the market. These include:

  • Single Function – Some Audi/Video (AV) switchers handle only video.
  • Duo Function – Some AV switchers are able to carry out both audio and video functions on each channel. This may be stereo analog audio, optical or digital. Digital audio switchers are good at what they do – transferring the digital audio signal.
  • DVI Switchers – These can handle be considered Digital audio switchers although they also are apt at handling an Analog signal
  • HDMI Switchers also able to switch analog or Digital Audio as the case may be. They may also be able to handle other signals.

When it comes to digital audio switchers, it could be coaxial (Coax) and/or optical.

What do Digital Audio Switchers actually do?

Essentially, what any switcher does is allow access to multiple devices. Digital audio switchers allow you to access several digital audio devices. The number varies from switcher to switcher. Some can switch the signals between eight sources and displays. They must all have, of course, compatible inputs in order for it to work. It is also essential you make sure the cables employed as connectors are compatible. Often the connective cable is coaxial because it is cheap and easily available but this is not necessarily the way you need to go. Fiber optic cords are also acceptable and provide a better alternative.

Finding your Way

The variety of digital audio switchers present on the market should give you pause. It is always best not to purchase something cheap because it is the least expensive. It may turn out to be cheap in more ways than one. The same applies to spending copious money on the most expensive digital audio switchers available. These, like the cheap ones, may not be worth what you paid.

Take your time and talk to someone who knows not only about digital audio switchers but is also knowledgeable about your system. By getting educated in the dos-and-don’ts of digital audio switchers and your entertainment system, you are more likely to obtain the best possible switcher for your system at the best possible price. Wikinews interviews Jo Jorgensen, U.S. Libertarian Party presidential nominee

Thursday, October 29, 2020

Professor Jo Jorgensen of South Carolina, the U.S. Libertarian Party’s 2020 presidential nominee, answered some questions about her campaign from Wikinews accredited reporter William S. Saturn.

Jorgensen is a psychology professor at Clemson University.   In 1992, with the Libertarian Party’s backing, she ran for public office, seeking South Carolina’s 4th congressional seat in the United States House of Representatives. She finished the race in third place with almost 2.16 percent of the total vote. Four years later, the Libertarian Party tapped Jorgensen to be its vice presidential nominee. She joined a ticket with the late Harry Browne. Browne-Jorgensen appeared on every state ballot and received a total of 485,798 votes, which was roughly 0.5 percent. This marked the best performance for the party since 1980 and would not be topped percentage-wise until 2012 when former New Mexico governor Gary Johnson attained 0.99 percent of the vote. Johnson bested that performance in 2016 as the party’s presidential nominee for a second time, earning 3.27 percent of the vote, the highest percentage for the party since its 1971 inception.

For the 2020 nomination, Jorgensen navigated through a primary campaign that featured the short-lived campaigns of former Rhode Island governor Lincoln Chafee and Congressman Justin Amash of Michigan, the first sitting Congressman to be a member of the Libertarian Party. At the virtual 2020 Libertarian National Convention, Jorgensen won the nomination on the fourth ballot, edging attorney Jacob Hornberger, performance artist Vermin Supreme and activist Adam Kokesh, among others. Podcaster Spike Cohen, originally the running mate of Supreme, was picked to be the party’s vice presidential nominee. Cohen spoke to Wikinews back in June. The Jorgensen-Cohen ticket has since secured ballot access in all 50 states and the District of Columbia.

As a libertarian, an ideology that advocates for lesser government, both in the social and economic realms, Jorgensen’s issue positions include a mix of traditionally liberal and conservative stances. She supports both LGBT rights and gun rights. She opposes the police state and the taxing authority equally. And, she supports an open immigration policy while arguing against the welfare state.

With Wikinews, Jorgensen discusses her background, COVID-19, her potential cabinet, gridlock, and an assortment of issues including climate change, foreign affairs, free speech, and race relations.

Clothes from China piling up on European borders

Wednesday, August 24, 2005

Clothes worth millions of euros are being blocked in European warehouses after the European Union imposed quotas on ten types of textiles from China.

The European Commission agreed to the quotas with China in July and many of them, including jumpers (sweaters) and trousers were quickly exceeded.

Retailers across Europe are now claiming they face massive losses. The European consumer’s organisation, BEUC, has said that most of the clothes were ordered before the agreement was made and that their blockage is “ignoring the basic laws of economics”.

A representative warned: “The new quotas will lead to higher prices and less choice for European consumers when they try to buy trousers, pullovers, women’s blouses, brassieres and other textile products in the coming months.”

The Commission is sending a representative to China to try and find a solution to the crisis, but according to the news website Euractive, the quotas are unlikely to be dropped as most EU member countries are in favour of them.

In addition, many people think that bankruptcy carries a stigma along with it and they don’t want to be seen as a failure. However a bankruptcy attorney can show you how to actually become debt free using bankruptcy as a tool. This allows you to take full control over your finances for a fresh start. Becoming debt free is much easier when the majority of your debts are forgiven through bankruptcy.

Chapter 7 Bankruptcy

When you consult with a bankruptcy attorney, they will discuss your current state of finances to determine what the best course of action is for you. Through the means test, it will be determined if you are eligible to file for Chapter 7 bankruptcy. Once it is deemed so, you can complete a credit counselling session and then you will be able to have the majority of your unsecured debts wiped clean.

Chapter 13 Bankruptcy

For individuals who do not qualify for Chapter 7 bankruptcy, Chapter 13 is the next best option. In this type of bankruptcy, a debt repayment plan is used to help the individual to get out of debt. The repayment plan is set over a 3 to 5 year period during which time secured debts are payed with a specific allocated amount each month. This type of bankruptcy is very effective at helping debtors to recover themselves financially. They can still retain possessions of their belongings while rebuilding their lives debt free.

Freedom from debt

Freedom from debt is possible with the help of a bankruptcy attorney. A bankruptcy attorney offers guidance and direction about which route to take to become debt free. Buddhist relic collection tours North America and world

Saturday, November 25, 2006

With the hopes of funding the creation of a statue in northern India that would end up dwarfing the Statue of Liberty, an unprecedented collection of Buddhist artifacts continue crisscrossing American, Europe, and Asia in three different, but related collections.

The Maitreya Project, the brainchild of Lama Zopa Rinpoche, seeks to build a monument and development dedicated to Buddhism at Kushinagar, Uttar Pradesh in northern India. The centerpiece of this massive development will be a 152m (500 ft) bronze statue of the Maitreya Buddha, the Buddha of the future.

Buddhist belief says that there have been Buddhas in the distant past and there will be Buddhas in the distant future. The historical Buddha, the one who was born in India about 2500 years ago, is known as Shakyamuni Buddha. Buddhist belief says that sometime in the distant future the teachings that Shakyamuni Buddha brought to Earth will fade away. At that point the Maitreya Buddha will be born and gain enlightenment in order to refresh and renew Buddhist teachings.

Along with the statue, the development is also planned to include temples, exhibition halls, parks, a museum, library, and a theater as well as a hospital and educational center.

In order to move forward with this project the Maitreya Project has created collections of artifacts that are touring the world. Once the statue is built these artifacts will be housed in it for viewing.

Buddhist artifacts are usually associated with the body of the person involved. While they can be such things as bone and teeth, usually they are pearl-like objects that are found and collected after the enlightened person is creamated. These pearl-like objects are called ringsel.

There are three collections of artifacts currently touring American, Europe, and East Asia. They include relics from the immediate past Buddha, called Kasyapa, the historical Buddha, five of his original disciples, several Tibetan and Zen masters, and the 14th Dalai Lama, Tenzin Gyatso.

Wikinews reporter Richard Kinne spent three days with the relics when the North American tour came to Ithaca, NY a few weeks ago. The relics travel with two caretakers, one of whom is always in close proximity to the relics. Setup for the relics display can take about four hours depending on the venue. Taking it down takes a bit under two hours.

Each morning of the tour the relics are taken out of their padded case and placed in clear plexiglass display cases. The relics are displayed individually in small containers called stupas. Some containers appear very full, while others contian just one very small object. Each evening the process is reversed and the padded case stays with the relic caretakers.

Between the morning and the evening people from all walks of life come to see the relics – believers, people who are curious, academics, Buddhist monks and nuns, both older folks and small children. While the Heart Relic Tour just does deals with displaying the relics, the sponsoring venue can add to the display in various ways such as lectures, meditation classes and demonstrations, or various other rituals.

The tour in North America reaches Jacksonville, FL during the first weekend of December. From there it will go to Miami between the 9th to the 11th, and then to Phoenix, AZ between the 15th to the 17th. In Asia the tour spends time in Malaysia in the first part of December.
