New study of endangered whale shark youth shows vital habitat similarities

Sunday, June 10, 2018

In findings published on Friday in PeerJ, an open-access peer-reviewed scientific journal, researchers from the University of York and Maldives Whale Shark Research Programme have mapped key habitats of the world’s largest fish, the whale shark, shedding light on congregation sites that have perplexed marine biologists.

According to the researchers, Whale sharks, Rhincodon typus, listed as endangered under the IUCN Red List, do feed in the open ocean, but juveniles tend to form large groups in only about 20 to 25 specific places around the coasts of Mexico, Belize, the Maldives, and Australia, which previous research has not explained. The research team reviewed dozens of previous papers, compiled their findings into a database, and performed spatial analysis with the aggregate shark-related event data. Results showed the sharks’ frequented sites had areas of very shallow water near a steep drop-off into the depths, such as a shelf break or reef slope.

The whale shark can grow to eighteen metres (60 ft) in length. Unlike its better-known relatives, the Great white shark and other predatory sharks, the whale shark is a filter feeder, meaning that it draws water into its mouth and extracts small organisms from the liquid. They can search for food at the surface of the ocean but are also known to dive deep. According to supervising author Dr Bryce Stewart, PhD, “Sharks are ectotherms, which means they depend on external sources of body heat. Because they may dive down to feed at depths of more than 1900 metres, where the water temperature can be as cold as four degrees, they need somewhere close by to rest and get their body temperature back up. Steep slopes in the seabed also cause an upwelling of sea currents that stimulate plankton and small crustaceans such as krill that the whale sharks feed on.”

Such sites are also attractive to fishing and recreational boating, and collisions can injure sharks. Stewart emphasized the importance of using research to help preserve and protect the sharks, calling them, “extremely valuable to local people on the coastlines where they gather, which are often in developing countries. While a whale shark can be worth as much as $250,000 USD dead, alive it can provide more than $2 Million USD over the course of its life span.” The latter figure specifically estimates only ecotourism.

KKE: Interview with the Greek Communist Party

Thursday, May 13, 2010

Wikinews reporter Iain Macdonald has performed an interview with Dr Isabella Margara, a London-based member of the Communist Party of Greece (KKE). In the interview Margara sets out the communist response to current events in Greece as well as discussing the viability of a communist economy for the nation. She also hit back at Petros Tzomakas, a member of another Greek far-left party which criticised KKE in a previous interview.

The interview comes amid tensions in cash-strapped Greece, where the government is introducing controversial austerity measures to try to ease the nation’s debt-problem. An international rescue package has been prepared by European Union member states and the International Monetary Fund – should Greece require a bailout; protests have been held against government attempts to manage the economic situation.

bookmark_borderThe Basics Of A Cubicle Track

byAlma Abell

In hospitals and office cubicles around the world, separation of space is often accomplished through the hanging of curtains. Once, ropes or wires were sufficient to hold the various fabrics and materials that provided privacy. Today, a cubicle track can easy to maintain and install.

What is a Cubicle Track?

In many hospital wards, you create privacy and separate the larger space into individual “rooms” through using curtains. These curtains are suspended from and run along a curtain tract. A cubicle track is the type of track used to support a cubicle curtain system. It may vary from institution to institution. It may also differ within each facility as the tracks are intended to suit the purpose, shape and requirements of each room. The type of cubicle track may also vary according to the construction materials or methods used for the facility.

What Does it Look Like?

A cubicle track is a length of metal. The metal must be:

  • Corrosion resistant
  • Able to withstand a range of temperatures
  • Made of material that will not attract and contain bacteria or other disease causing or contributing substances

A cubicle track has been designed specifically to address the needs of a cubicle. As such, the metal has been bent to conform to a specific shape. The metal is usually coated in white. This allows it to blend in with the traditional white ceilings of a hospital or other medical facility.

In order to make certain the cubicle track allows the curtains to move easily along, a Teflon coating is applied. In addition, gliding carriers are incorporated to ease the nature of the work.

Classification of a Cubicle Track

Essentially, you can classify most cubicle curtain tracks into two types. These are ceiling mounted and suspended.

Ceiling Mounted Cubicle Track: These aluminum track systems are hung from the ceiling. They are mounted wherever they can act in an effective manner. This system is not viable where the ceiling are extremely high (requiring ladders to change the cubicle curtains) or where systems and other obstructions prevent the direct connection between the cubicle track and the ceiling.

Suspended Tracking Systems: If the ceiling are too high for ceiling mounted cubicle track or obstructions prevent a direct connection, this is the best option. The curtain track is suspended from the ceiling by the means of an aluminum tube.

A cubicle track is part of an integrated cubicle curtain system. It forms the basis upon which the curtains will be hung. Depending upon the ceiling, you may choose between a suspended and a mounted cubicle track system. In either case, it is important to carefully research what type of tracking system will work best in your facility before you decide to purchase one. To get more variety of cubicle curtains, visit

Australian comedians “could have been shot” during APEC prank

Friday, September 7, 2007

According to the highest ranking police officer in New South Wales, the cast and crew of Australian TV show, The Chaser’s War on Everything could have been shot during a prank staged in Sydney where they breached APEC security.

The comedians staged a fake motorcade to gain access to the APEC restricted area in Sydney’s CBD. It is believed that the motorcade was waved through security checkpoints on Macquarie Street and ended up just metres from the hotel where United States President George W. Bush was staying. Police moved in on the group when one of the pranksters emerged from a vehicle dressed as Osama bin Laden.

Police commissioner Andrew Scipione said the prank could have resulted in someone being injured. “The reality is… (they) put security services in a position where they might have had to take an action no one would want.”

“We have snipers deployed around the city. They weren’t there for show, they mean business, that’s what they were there for,” said Mr Scipione.

I’m angry, I’m very angry that this stunt happened, it was a very dangerous stunt.

Mr Scipione was annoyed that the stunt had been carried out. He said “I’m angry, I’m very angry that this stunt happened, it was a very dangerous stunt.” The commissioner also said that the comedians had already been warned about carrying out pranks during APEC. “The people that were involved were told – we told them, we sent them maps, … We made it very clear that they shouldn’t do stunts, particularly those that were going to be dangerous,” said Mr Scipione.

Neil Fergus, senior executive for Intelligent Risks and former intelligence chief for the Sydney Olympics spoke out against those responsible for the prank. He reinforced that the prank could have ended up in someone being hurt and commended the police for dealing with the situation in the way they did.

“People can talk over each other on radios and there can be confusion, so the police response – I think – was terrific,” he said.

“And thank God it was what it was. You’ve only got to look at the experience that a very professional police service had in London when a young Brazilian was tragically shot by anti-terrorism forces.”

“So I think the police are to be commended with the professional way that they did identify the incursion, the restraint that they showed in handling it and the fact that what we’re talking about today is a bad and irresponsible joke, instead of a more tragic set of circumstances.”

The show’s executive producer Morrow denied placing anyone in danger.

“Was it irresponsible? I wouldn’t think so. Hard to say,” he said.

“No, no. We had no intention of harming anyone. Sorry guys … Lucky it was us and not Al Qaeda.”

Richard Hammond injured in jet-powered car crash

Wednesday, September 20, 2006

Richard Hammond, a British television presenter known for presenting shows such as Top Gear and Brainiac, is in a “stable” condition in hospital following a car accident during filming for Top Gear. He was injured when the jet-powered car he was driving crashed during filming for the former. The car, similar to the “Vampire” which holds the British land speed record, overturned whilst being driven at speeds of up to 300 miles per hour at Elvington airfield near York, in what was suggested to be an attempt at bettering the previous record. It has been suggested that he succeeded in a previous attempt. Emergency services were called to the scene at 5.45pm local time (16.45 UTC).

He was airlifted to the specialist neurological unit at Leeds General Infirmary. A former firefighter who was providing fire safety at the site and witnessed the accident said that Hammond was initially unconscious but able to speak when removed from the wreckage. At the time he indicated some pain in his lower back. Numerous eyewitnesses from the Top Gear crew claimed he was ‘helped into’ an air ambulance, suggesting he was conscious at the time. The ambulance service is reported to have said that Hammond was unconscious when they arrived at the scene, but began to regain consciousness upon arrival at the hospital.

The car was “very very badly damaged and in many pieces on the runway”, according to BBC News 24, reporting comments made by his colleagues.

A web sitehas been set up for well-wishers enabling them to donate to the Yorkshire Air Ambulance. This site will accept donations until January 21, 2007. As of 23.09 (UTC) 21st September 2006 (day 2) £52,239.90 had been raised, surpassing the original target of £340.00 and well past their target of £51,000 (150 flights) that was set in the past few days.

Spacex cancels Falcon 1 launch until 2006

Monday, December 19, 2005

Rocket company SpaceX, notorious for repeatedly pre-announcing its first flight on Wikinews, cancels its latest attempt and defers further flights until 2006.

This latest launch attempt on the 19th December was cancelled due to structural issues with the first-stage fuel tank of the Falcon 1 rocket. An electrical fault caused a valve to shut inappropriately, and as fuel drained out a vacuum was created causing the side of the fuel tank to buckle inwards.

bookmark_borderConsidering Options For New Kitchen Cabinets In Main Line Pa

byAlma Abell

With the mortgage settled and money on hand to invest in some renovations, why not begin with the kitchen? A major part of the project will focus on buying new Kitchen Cabinets in Main Line PA. Here are some things to keep in mind when looking at possible replacements.

Consider the Materials

Think of what materials would provide the right combination of appearance and function. Depending on the style that the homeowner has in mind for the kitchen, metal cabinets may be a great choice. For those who want to go with something more traditional, wooden cabinets are worth considering. There is even the option of going with some combination, such as wooden cabinetry that sports doors containing decorative tin panels.

Color or Stain

Depending on the materials chosen, there is the need to choose a color or stain for the new cabinetry. Consider a stain or color that helps to tie the color scheme together without being overpowering. For example, if the wallpaper used in the kitchen contains a color that is used sparingly in the design, that color could be a good candidate for the paint. When the homeowner prefers wood, opt for a stain that helps to bring out the natural beauty of the wood grain.

Size Matters

Ideally, the Kitchen Cabinets in Main Line PA chosen by the homeowner will be a perfect fit for the space. Measure the areas where the cabinets and counters will go, making sure there is no space wasted. Doing so will make it all the easier to organize items in the cabinets and retrieve them whenever the need arises.

The Cost

Unless there is an unlimited flow of cash for the renovation, it is important to consider the cost of different types of cabinetry. Determine what features the cabinets must have and do not settle for less. That will make it easier to find options that are in line with the budget, but also have the quality that the homeowner seeks.

Keep in mind that the team at Walter and Jackson, Inc. is always on hand to help. They can evaluate the present kitchen, talk with the owner about what needs to be changed, and come up with some ideas for the homeowner to consider. Once the selections are made, a contractor will be able to remove the old cabinetry and have the new cabinets in place in no time.

SpaceX launches fifth resupply rocket to International Space Station

Sunday, January 11, 2015

Space transport services company SpaceX launched their fifth Dragon resupply vehicle to the International Space Station yesterday. The spacecraft — containing more than 2,200kg (5,000 pounds) of food, experiments, and spare parts — successfully decoupled from the launch rocket and should reach the station early tomorrow.

The launch was postponed from Tuesday because of a technical issue on the second stage of the rocket. The shipment includes replacements for cargo aboard the spaceship Cygnus, destroyed during a failed launch in October. Cygnus belonged to the rival Orbital Sciences Corporation.

SpaceX tried unsuccessfully to land the Falcon 9 delivery rocket for reuse. The rocket reached an unmanned barge in the Atlantic, but landed too hard. SpaceX CEO Elon Musk said the landing “bodes well for the future, though”. The attempted salvage of the rocket was experimental, using new retractable fins. Next time they will add extra hydraulic fluid, Musk said.

The ship’s support equipment was damaged but, according to Musk, the barge is intact. Last year saw two successful SpaceX splashdowns but landing on such a small target as a ship is unique.

Apes and birds are able to plan ahead: psychologists

Friday, May 19, 2006

According to psychologists in Leipzig, Germany, apes and some birds are able to plan their actions ahead of time.

Psychologists Nicholas Mulcahy and Josep Call at Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology say that apes are able to save tools to use at a later time, that will assist them in retrieving food.

The results of the testing are “groundbreaking” and is “a starting point from which we can begin to reconstruct the evolution of the human mind. Apes and jays can also anticipate future needs by remembering past events, contradicting the notion that such cognitive behavior only emerged in hominids,” said Thomas Suddendorf, a psychologist at the University of Queensland Brisbane, Australia.

One aspect of the study is that “our extraordinary abilities of planning for the future did not evolve entirely de novo. Planning for future needs is not uniquely human,” added Suddendorf.

An experiment was performed using bonobos and orangutans. The psychologists placed the apes alone in a room for five minutes. Each of them had a choice of two tools that would allow them to retrieve food and six that would not. The apes were allowed to look at and observe the tools; however, they were not allowed to handle them.

The apes were then taken to a room next door, allowed to take whatever tools they chose, and left alone in the room for at least one hour, while a researcher removed all other tools from the first room. The apes then returned to the first room (where the food was), but the food was not accessible unless they had the right tool to retrieve it.

After repeating the same test several times with each ape, researchers began to see that most apes would begin to use the right tool for the job. Researchers also received similar results even when the apes were left alone in a room overnight where they would sleep.

To make sure that the apes were not associating the tools with the food, they removed the food from the room, but would still give it to the apes if they used the right tool to retrieve it. After this change, most of them did not bring the proper tools, which researchers say confirm that the retrieval is a way of planning for the job.

In experiments using scrub jays (found mostly in the western United States), at the University of Cambridge in the United Kingdom, psychologists have shown that the birds, who usually hide their food to eat later, will hide it again if an enemy bird saw them do it the first time, unless the bird is dominant. The subordinate jay could however, fight the other for the food.

“These results suggest scrub jays remember who observed them make specific caches,” said Joanna Dally who was involved in the study with the scrub jays.

“Together with recent evidence from scrub jays, our results suggest that future planning is not a uniquely human ability, thus contradicting the notion that it emerged in hominids only with the past 2.5 to 1.6 million years,” said Mulcahy and Call in the study.
